I see ADHD not as a disorder or a consequence of childhood trauma, but as an evolutionary variant of human cognition—a distinct way of experiencing and interacting with the world. Conventional narratives label ADHD as a clinical issue caused by negative early experiences, yet I believe that ADHD represents an ancient blueprint for thought, one that developed to meet different environmental and social demands.

I reject the oversimplified view that ties ADHD directly to childhood trauma. While it’s true that feeling more deeply can result in a higher likelihood of encountering difficult experiences, the root of ADHD lies in our genetic and neurobiological heritage—a natural, though diverse, form of human cognition. The ADHD brain, with its capacity for intense emotion, spontaneity, and imaginative thought, offers an alternative strategy of adaptation. Its strengths include rapid insight and the ability to think outside conventional boundaries, traits that have historically driven innovation and change.

In my view, human evolution has always been about diversity in how we think and feel. Neurotypical minds helped build the stable, organized societies we see today, but the unique contributions of ADHD-type cognition remind us that emotional richness and creative disruption are just as crucial. Embracing this perspective means recognizing that the ADHD brain, with its profound capacity to feel, is not inherently broken—it is simply different, a vital part of the evolutionary tapestry that allows humanity to adapt, innovate, and ultimately thrive.
