Based on what my sixteen-year old is listening to, there is a trend to marry underground rap with synthpop inspired production.  This is my attempt to do something similar...and, like always, the end result missed the target by a mile--but it is, certainly, very Interbay.  

(I can predict what my kid would say if they'd hear this track, "...not like THAT!"  It's ok.  I'm an old.  I'm not pretending to be part of the zeitgeist--but I will be inspired by whatever inspires me.)  

So, I had a sound to aim for.  Next, I needed something to point me in a thematic direction.  There's new Interbay dropping EVERY SINGLE DAY (so far!), so some tracks will be personal and are sharing my feelings, opinions, experiences...and other tracks will be me exploring other perspectives, to imagine a different life, seen with different eyes, expressed by different words.  

This is one of the latter ones.  

Lacking any specific personal story to tell, I rely on different ways to find a creative spark.  One place I can find a spark is to look for fun words starting with a particular letter.  So I looked for some fun "K" words...and I landed on Kitchener, the name of the town in Ontario, Canada.  

I've never been to Kitchener (I know that there's some comedy there, but I never got booked in Ontario.)  This track isn't about Kitchener, ON.  

What I took from the word was an idea of someone who finds themselves, unexpectedly, in a kitchen.  (The British word "bedsitter" came to mind--which suggested Soft Cell to me (R.I.P. Dave Ball).)  

A story developed in my head of a stylish man, living large, going out to clubs and five star restaurants in Miami.  He's got money, he's got a mansion, he's got everything he could possibly want...and he loses it all.  He thought he was untouchable.  He thought he could do anything he wanted to--so he did.  And doing what he did caused the end of his marriage, the end of the good life...and a transition into a very different world.  A world where you have to spend time in your own kitchen in your standard apartment, making yourself something to eat.  

Perhaps it is karma.  Perhaps this is just a break to reset priorities.  Perhaps this is a re-entry to the real world.  

He's angry, he's bitter, but he takes the responsibility for what has lead him here.  He's not lashing out at others, he's accepting his fate--even if he hopes it is only temporary.  He's confused.  He's out of his element.  He's growing as a result.  

(All this in a synthpop song with hip hop elements?  Sure.  It's Interbay.)  

...and, in classic silly decision--in my mind, I made him a hipster version of Horatio Kitchener--the British Uncle Sam, the face of the "Your Country Needs You" poster.  Only because it was funny to think of a Kitchener moving to Kitchener.
