With Zane Lowe pedestalling the first glimpse into Bensley’s diverse soundscape, ‘Fandango’ was a precursor for this forthcoming debut. ‘Next Generation’ is a bold move; with drum & bass being a genre which has certainly stood the test of time, newcomers have incredibly big shoes to fill. However, Bensley incorporates an innovative and incredibly intricate set of production skills to hold a title of his own.

But what can you expect from an artist who was signed after sending a single demo to revered label head Andy C. That’s despite having no previous releases or having any other music available to stream online. He was somewhat of a mystery.
‘Fandango’ was that track. And it was premiered as a world exclusive on leading tastemaker Radio1, which followed with support from the likes of Mistajam on 1xtra, as well as DJs on both Kiss and XFM.

Already demonstrating his widespread appeal with just one track, his air of mystery is now about to be broken. He’s definitely an anomaly; being only nineteen and having impressed so many people.

‘Next Generation’ is a 10-track journey through an impressively diverse soundscape. Whether it’s half-time breakdowns or the incorporation if cross genre-pollination it shows an astounding ability which will not go unrecognised.
From the opening bars of ‘Wildfire’, to the softly spoken pads and atmospheric note arpeggios of ‘Rain Dance’, then wrapped up by aptly named closing track ‘Aftermath’, there’s no denying Bensley’s masterful artistry.

Title-track ‘Next Generation’ leads you by the hand with snippets of humanistic sample, flowing in and out of its construct. It’s built upon by striking note progressions, a relaying of patterns which chop and change the mix. Carefully placed subs add impact, with emphasis given on each break, carrying the track forward down a steep drop with each slab of bass.

Drawing together a dizzying and fresh array of new sounds, this album indicates why Bensley is a forerunner within the new generation of music comers. Its representative of the fast paced technological setting of music production he grew up around; it also proves that Bensley is able to tap into dimensions which are often unheard of in other bodies of work.

Icicle - Dreadnaught (Phace Remix)

UK drum & bass heroes Drumsound & Bassline Smith are back to their brilliant best on future classic ‘Fearless’. The Midlands based trio have spawned numerous hits in recent years, with ‘across the board’ tastemaker support from MistaJam to Annie Mac, and ‘Fearless’ is tipped to be their biggest single yet.

Built on a rock-solid beat and heavy bassline, ‘Fearless’ is an uplifting, high-energy D&B track, taken to the next level by the vocal talents of ‘one to watch’ Stealth - who recently appeared on Roger Sanchez’s new track ‘Remember Me’ (Pete Tong Essential New Tune). Also featured are LCGC (aka London Community Gospel Choir) - who provide stunning the backing vocals on ‘Fearless’. LCGC have famously worked with the Queen of Pop Madonna, and have a busy 2015 schedule ahead, from touring festivals with house legend MK, with further appearances planned at Creamfields, and Defected events.

Drumsound & Bassline Smith – Rise of the Black Panther

It's that time again! As the sun makes its long-awaited appearance for 2016, Technique Recordings are gearing up for another summer album. And, as if that news wasn't exciting enough by itself, it comes accompanied with a taster courtesy of the label's bosses Drumsound & Bassline Smith.

Depending on your proclivities, the title “Rise of the Black Panther” might conjure up images of the civil rights struggle or of Marvel's first black superhero. Either way, it definitely brings to mind a seething undercurrent of power. Which is exactly what Drumsound & Bassline Smith have delivered here, wrapped in more unadulterated funk than we're used to seeing in recent D&B.

This tune is funky drum and bass in the classic sense, with no compromise. There's a crate-digger's treasure trove of samples, led by, of course, some almighty horn stabs. There's a driving live-sounding bass. There are head-nodding, body-moving drums. It's a joyous exploration of the way this music can be heavy, energetic and summertime-flavoured all at the same time.

While cold winter nights might invoke dark neuro and tech seriousness, this tune is all about the sunlight. And, if this is a benchmark for what the rest of the album has to offer, then D&B-lovers are in for something special this summer.
