Sumer was a great civilization to arise in Mesopotamia—the land between the rivers. It existed from 5000 BC to 2000 BC, spanning an incredibly 3,000 years time. Over the course of a only few weeks period it was laid to waste, it’s people left crying and traveling endlessly through muddy, flat plains to find a new home. Temples of great grandeur were abandoned, the home of the gods no longer lit by incense or chanting priests. All the gold decorations, the lapis colorings, the copper weaponry was stolen by invaders from all around as this great city of Ur fell. This great city—home to kings, to farmers, to the richest of men, to thousands of clay tablets recording the possible first language ever—was left nothing more than a heap of mud on a flat floodplain.
