In her personal sound essay Living with Misophonia, Sian Williams gives an insight into what it’s like living with a disorder that evokes a fight or flight reaction to everyday sounds. Her podcast surrounding the sensory processing disorder Misophonia explores her discovery of the syndrome and journey to finding closure. 

With influences from Gregory Whitehead and Hildegard Westerkamp, Sian uses sonic art in an attempt to immerse the listener in the world of the Misophonic. By utilizing a motif that moves from concord to discord, the listener is subjected to the inescapable way in which the trigger sound overwhelms the sufferer; the sound art echoes the emotions and build up of anxiety caused by these sounds.

The podcast addresses the importance of raising awareness about the disorder due to its invisibility in the medical sphere. With there being little to no information about the disorder, Sian creates a window in which the listener can see into the lives of those living with the destructive, emotionally painful disorder that is Misophonia.

In her podcast Searching for Silence, Sian Williams explores the rising interest in silent practices such as yoga, meditation and silent retreats as a response to our increasingly committed relationship with technology. She talks to sound expert David Hendy and director of In Pursuit of Silence, Patrick Shen, to investigate how our use of technology might affect our mental and physical health and why now more than ever, people are seeking refuge from it.

Sensing her answer could be found in the silence, Sian journeys to the “quietest room on Earth”, attempting to answer the question what is silence and can it ever be experienced? 

Inspired by works from George Prochnik and John Cage, Sian asks the listener to put their phone down for a while and appreciate the silence. Whether this is a literal silence or a silence in the mind as a tool to mediate our incessant need for stimuli, Sian aims to find out in her exciting and unique search for silence.
