Eduardo Rafael Da Cruz Ferreira - editor of the magazine FAZEmag - early devoted himself to electronic music. This week on the FMB Mixtape series we welcome Dj wiggles, UK Based DJ and founder / curator of the event and mix series ‘Kinetic’. We first caught up to find out a bit about the mix & what she’s been up to lately…

I started the year off pretty busy & focussed but Aprils been a much needed slower month for me. We recently adopted a rescue dog so a lot of time has been spent on helping him adjust to his new life, and creativity levels have been fairly varied so I’ve tried not to push myself too much. Lots of walks, nature & wholesome activities – getting my fix before the summer & festival season begins.

I’ve had a bit of a rollercoaster start to the year & like many people, been feeling pretty emotionally drained. When coming up with a concept for this, I thought about what bicep’s music (and the platform) had meant to me when I was in my 20s, and settled on something emotional and nostalgic. This mix is in part a fairly raw response to how I’ve been feeling emotionally recently, but also a collection of some of my favourite records which I’ve loved for years and will love forever.

Dubstep can be a super emotional genre but it’s not something I hear out very often, or that I get a chance to play a lot so this felt like the perfect opportunity. This is my favourite kind of dubstep, the late night / early morning rollers which really tug on the heartstrings, tears in the club kind of vibe.

I have very nostalgic memories surrounding these records and it was both a pleasure and a challenge putting them together. I feel like a heavy weight has been lifted after recording this mix, so hopefully this evokes a similar emotion for the listeners.

LA’s Carré kicks off the first in a two-part mix series curated by Darwin, marking a decade of the SPE:C label. Known for her subversive sets and a sharp focus on dubstep, leftfield techno, and bass-driven sounds, her contribution to the RC mix series delivers exactly that.

Darwin: "I met Carré a few years ago when she booked me for her party at Fast at Work in LA. I’d already been playing out her dubs quite a bit and had asked her then to sign to SPE:C. It was really inspiring to meet another woman as dedicated to running events and as passionate about dubstep and bass music as I am. Carré’s flair for lush, dreamy atmospheres is unmatched, and I feel honored to have been able to give her a platform to showcase that. She’s also a killer DJ and played one of the sickest after-hours sets at REEF last spring. You can check out her skills on this mix."

For Tectonic’s 20th anniversary, label boss Pinch rounds up some heaters from the label alongside their Tectonic Sound compilation. It’s about time for the fifth instalment of the Compost Black Label Series – unveiling some of the finest cuts in the label’s recent history in a versatile DJ mix crafted by Compost family member Thomas Herb, who built a strong reputation as a DJ when it’s about merging soul-injected house, techno and disco into a musical journey. Featuring winner tunes and remixes by Phreek Plus One, Osunlade, Woolfy, DJ T. or Rainer Trueby, Herb is also highlighting the work of new breed like Emil Seidel, Philipp Stoya and Emilie Nana, who all contributed high-quality tunes on the Black Label within the last year. Playing on top of the game since about one and a half decades, the Bob Beaman resident DJ, holding a steadily growing national and international schedule, is kicking things off with some proper nu-school vibes until he smoothly blends to balearic and disco influenced territories – then somehow he’s already in the middle of Holland Tunnel, the New Jersey styled tune by Muallem, opening our minds eye for the glittering skyline of Manhattan and our ears for this music called house - unfolding its purest grooves and energy within the mix. Keeping up the level, Thomas Herb subsequently heading the ship towards a middle west inspired direction, throwing in some decent rave signals without loosing his fluent, elegant style he carefully morphs into a old school Chicago vibe! The set is closing with Lukas Bohlender’s beautiful stringloaden emo-houser Club Chateâu. Apart from storytelling, quality and programming the tunes itself, Thomas Herb unmistakably put some extra focus on adding this kind of warm, handcrafted, dynamic live-vibe – and he succeeds big time with this sophisticated little bastard of a DJ-mix.
