Program Note
Tagundnachtgleiche (Equinox) was created on the occasion of a composition competition for brass quintets announced by the publishing house Furore Verlag in 2017.
At the beginning of 2023, I decided to record the piece in a recording studio and to make it available to the public. The trumpeter Bernhard Plagg was kind enough to take on the project. He put together a brass quintet, organised rehearsal dates, etc.
The composition consists of two elements that alternate or interpenetrate each other. On the one hand, composed, notated music, harmonic and rhythmic in the broadest sense. And on the other, improvised music, mainly consisting of differentiated, nuanced noises and representing a kind of random music, like random sounds in nature.

Die alte Version habe drin gelassen, weil sie schon von einigen Leuten kommentiert und repostet worden war.

Das Stück gehört zu den drei ausgewählten Arbeiten, die im Rahmen des Prix Ars Acustica des WDR Köln produziert wurden. 
Prayer for the Sun Before Traveling war zudem für den Karl-Sczuka-Preis nominiert und erhielt den ersten Preis beim Internationalen Kompositions- wettbewerb "Soundscapes voor 2000" in den Niederlanden.

Prayer for the Sun Before Traveling basiert auf einem prä-kolumbianischen Text und ist zugleich Klanglandschaft, Gedichtvertonung, akustischer Reisebericht, Klangportrait einer geographischen Region und Dokumentation einer im Untergang begriffenen Sprache und Kultur.
  
Die Idee zu dem Stück entstand bereits 1994 während eines
Studienaufenthalts in New York (Stipendium der Berliner Senatsverwaltung für Wissenschaft, Forschung und Kultur), wo ich Anregungen für ein neues Projekt suchte – Thema: Sprache als Kulturträger.
  
Im Poets-House stieß ich auf den Band „Snake Poems - An Aztek Invocation“ des jungen, in Kalifornien lebenden Dichters Francisco X. Alarcón, der sich in seinen neuesten Gedichten auf prä-kolumbianische sogenannte „Spells and Prayers“ der Azteken bezieht. Snake Poems beinhaltet Originalgedichte aus der Zeit vor Cortes in nahuatl, die von Alarcon ins Englische nachgedichtet wurden und zeitgenössische in englisch und spanisch, die den Geist der alten reflektieren und neu beleben.

Während ich begann, einige der zeitgenössischen und alten Texte für kleine Instrumentalbesetzungen – teilweise unter Einbeziehung von Elektronik – zu vertonen, vertiefte ich mich immer mehr in die faszinierende Welt der alten Azteken und betrieb in verschiedenen New Yorker Museen und Institutionen Forschungen, die ich später im Ibero-Amerikanischen Institut in Berlin und im Museo de Antropología y Historia und anderen Einrichtungen in Mexico City fortsetzte.

Es folgten drei Mexiko-Aufenthalte, wo ich im Bundesstaat Guerrero in Dörfen, in denen noch Nahuatl gesprochen wird, „Field Recordings” und Aufnahmen der Gedichte in der Originalsprache machte (in der Gegend, wo Alarcón’s Namensvetter, der Missionar Hernando Ruiz de Alarcón, die Gedichte um 1629 im Rahmen der Inquisition in seinem „Tratado de las supersticiones y costumbres gentilicas que hoy viven entre los indios naturales desta Nueva España"  dokumentiert hat). 
  
Das vorläufig letzte Werk dieser Serie ist Prayer for the Sun Before Traveling, bei dem ich auf jegliche Klangverfremdung verzichtet habe, sondern  neben den Einspielungen von Beth Griffith, Normisa Pereira da Silva and Michael Ranta lediglich die puren O-Töne verwendete, die ich im Oktober 1997 in Guerrero / Mexiko  aufgenommen habe.

Prayer for the Sun Before Traveling  is based on a pre-Columbian text. It is a soundcsape, the setting to music of a poem, an acoustic travel reportage, the portrait of a land and the recording of its language and its culture before they are lost.

This work, the latest of a series of compositions, setting Nahuatl texts to music, was written for and reached the final stage of the Ars Acustica Competition of WDR, Studio Akustische Kunst, 1997 and has won the first price in the international competition „Soundscapes voor 2000“ in the Netherlands.

It consists of a poem in Nahuatl, spoken by Maricruz Aniceto Iglesias, a Nahua woman, field recordings made by Sibylle Pomorin in villages in Guerrero/ Mexico, where Nahuatl is still spoken, and music by Sibylle Pomorin, sung by Beth Griffith and played by Normisa Pereira da Silva and Michael Ranta. The english version of the poem, translated by the poet  Francisco X. Alarcón, who lives in California, is interpreted by Beth Griffith.

All the sounds are imployed as recorded, without studio re-working, to recall simply the beauty of the Nahua culture and the landscape in which it lives.

Composer Contemporary Music

Sibylle Pomorin (*1956) studied from 1975 until 1980 flute and saxophone at the Staatliche Hochschule für Musik in Münster, Germany. 

In 1984/85, she studied composition under Ernst Bechert in Hamburg, Germany and in 1994, she received composition lessons and an introduction to electroacoustic music from the American composer and electronic musician Alice Shields during a six-month stay in New York. 

Between 1982 and 1994 she toured with improvising musicians of the international scene and toured with her own groups and compositions through Europe and Israel. 

She received composition commissions for ensembles, festivals, broadcasting, and theatre as well as numerous prices and awards and was promoted by various working scholarships – inter alia in New York, Istanbul and Iceland. Scores publications and CD releases inter alia by Moers Music and in the Furore Verlag. 

Her music has been performed at international festivals for contemporary music in Europe, Israel, Mexico, Australia, Canada, Georgia, Japan and the USA.
