In the English language, the word “break” can be morphed into so many different applications.
It can be relaxing in the sense of taking a break after a long day. It can be harsh and emotional in the sense of breaking a promise to a loved one. It can be random and messy like a glass full of water breaking on the floor into a thousand pieces.
In the club, all of these different ideas take sonic form in the fast-rising subgenre of breaks, where the traditional metronomic kick is thrown into reckless abandon and the artist can apply any and all energies—a task the producer and DJ Jesse Leer accomplished in fine style on his new EP, Center of Pressure.
The latest release from Seattle’s own Feral One Records, Leer returns to the label with his own solo two-tracker after contributing another splendid breaks tune entitled “Coin Trick” to FO’s debut compilation, Seattle Volume 1, last Fall.
Both cuts on Center of Pressure drive home the diversity of the breaks sound with everything from their motion-fueled titles, “Center of Pressure” and “Swivel,” to their uncaged approach to melody.
The title track is what happens when the concept of centrifugal force becomes a piece of club-ready music. The only thing coming from the center is pressure, pushing the untamed drums, the buoyant bassline, the seething pads, and the jittering arpeggios to the outer edges.
Then “Swivel” musically embodies various movements that one would generally associate with a swivel chair. Sliding around the room are the sweeping high hats. Spinning in place are the rhythmic yet cyclical acid squelches, and the epic and lawless breakdown, well that’s why your parents told you not to stand on a swivel chair when you were a kid.
