“Soul Feast” is a song that, despite the aggressive nature of its name, is lyrically about accepting the emotionally charged end of a relationship, of essentially any type, without the use physical violence of any kind for any reason.  Growing up enslaved to physical and emotional abuse, I am aware firsthand of the devastatingly negative effects that it has wrought on my own adult relationships and self-worth – but at the same time, as a parent, it has taught me the right way to raise and discipline my children, and as an adult, to understand that violence is never the answer under any circumstances. The concept of a “Soul Feast” is inspired from the culmination of feelings that exists in an abyss that is far beyond any human’s typical understanding of sadness, anger, and despair.  And in this infinite abyss, the disappointment and apoplectic rage that one may feel for the other person is not translated in the form of physical violence for revenge for their wrongdoings but instead expressed as a desire to consume and forever become one, and remain in love with, the utmost purest and most desirable version of that person’s existence – their soul!

SOUL FEAST

The phrase Mark My Words is hundreds of years old and has biblical origins which refer to the notion that mankind cannot be trusted under any circumstance.  Over the centuries, the expression has changed to tell someone to listen to and remember ominous words foreshadowing that nothing good will come of this! Sick Life’s “Mark My Words” essentially echoes both meanings of the classical phrase and takes the form of a prophetic song depicting the extreme cynicism concerning the outcome of a particularly tumultuous relationship.  Reeling from disappointment and heartbreak, no matter what course of events that are now chosen from this point on, it is to be believed that the relationship, and the individuals themselves, are now         ill-fated.  Biblical references continue to inspire and drive the metaphors to compare the pain and sacrifice of the journey and crucifixion of Jesus Christ to that of the nature of this relationship and the toll that it has taken bringing at least one of them to, and most likely past, the point of no return.  The change in the pitch of the screams throughout each chorus, as well as the scathing and brutally vulnerable lyrics of each verse, foretells of a bleak and disturbing unraveling which ultimately leads to the disintegration of core emotions where love and hate is no longer distinguished between one another.    Hope has now been replaced with a more daunting and powerful emotion - the relentless and eternal feeling of impending and inescapable doom!

MoB - No Closure

The word Disaster is defined as a sudden event, such as an accident or a natural catastrophe, that causes great damage or loss of life.  Sick Life’s “Praying for Disaster” was written to encapsulate the exact moment of realization when the desire for the absolute worst-case-scenario that one could possibly imagine is preferred over the current emotional fiasco.  The concept of preferring disaster as an option at all is fascinating in the sense of truly putting the listener in the position of the writer and how they truly feel about the other person and the situation.  Death is the counterintuitive solution to any issue, except in this case, where the relinquishing of life is viewed as a reprieve and is encouraged and welcomed with open arms.   The bellowing chorus of ‘never forgive, never forget’ is not advice for the writer to follow in this current life, but words of wisdom to carry over into the next phase of existence as the offences against were so blatantly flagrant and egregious.  Redemption is simply not an option.  “Praying for Disaster” utterly illustrates how heartbreak, hopelessness, and disappointment are a powerfully destructive combination and Sick Life brings every ounce of that raging, personal anguish to the surface of each listener and relentlessly attacks with their gut-wrenching lyrics and soul-pounding rhythms.  If you have never truly prayed for disaster, we pray that you never will.           However, if you have - and survived - then we pray that you never will have to again.
