In 2003 my aunt brought me 4 cd-roms full of favela Funk from Rio De Jareiro, Brazil.
I recently found them back, when I got a cd-player for my birthday and I rediscovered the raw quality of these ultra rough recordings, so I decided to compile the best tracks and pieces for a 1 hour mixtape.

PREMIERE #836 | Renée van Trier - SOMETHING IS WRONG WITH ME (PUNK) [CAF?] 2020

Sukubratz (@suku-bratz) is an Italian-Chilean DJ and visual artist, currently based, and active in Rotterdam. Her visual work focuses on Virtual Reality and video making, reflecting on topics like self-identity, political deception, and abuse of power.  

Sukubratz: 

"This is a year of change, and we have been witnessing it together. For me it started with the estallido [x] in October 2019 in Chile, my mother's country, which has been very intense and eye-opening at the same time. During the course of this year, I got a better understanding of the state-controlled tools of oppression that have existed for centuries now. It has affected my family and me in a way that I, as a rather privileged person, have never experienced before. It was a moment of change, and after experiencing xenophobia in The Netherlands, I became even more aware of how other systems affect BIPOC, and especially black people. I stand for the bigger cause, to eradicate systemic forms of supremacy, racism, hosmophobia, xenophobia and transphobia. On a daily basis I talk to friends and family about this, look for ways to come together, to take care of each other and support initiatives that share the goal of relieving and supporting communities and individuals.

This mix is a tribute to the drum as instrument, focusing on drum rhythms from different cultural backgrounds. The most beautiful rhythms are created by drums, and I am sure many of you can relate to this. To me, the drum also represents an instrument of resistance, being present at marches, revolutionary gatherings and such. In a way these sounds convey my current emotional sphere. There's no better feeling than the feeling of unity, especially during these times of violence. 
Love to everyone, you are not alone; luchamos juntos."

[x] estallido: the ongoing civil protest in Chile, in response to a Metro fare hike on October 18, 2019, in a way the last straw in the context of the increased cost of living, privatisation and inequality prevalent in the country.
