Calling The Guru from Afar, 30 June - 1 July 2010, Menz, Germany

In his commentary on this important mindfulness teaching by the great nineteenth-century rimé (non-sectarian) master, Jamgön Kongtrül Lodrö Thaye, Dzongsar Khyentse Rinpoche explains that guru devotion, or “calling to the guru” is a technique to attack our habit of self-cherishing. The text can be depressing as it clearly details all our negative habits, yet the most profound teachings are those that disturb rather than inspire us. We repeatedly call on the guru to recognize us because we do not see that the guru is always with us. We ask for the blessings of the guru to cut through our pride, ego-clinging and dualistic vision. Through supplicating the guru, our intellectual understanding of the dharma can develop into the confidence that ultimately the guru is none other than buddhanature: the fundamental nature of our mind.

The Buddha is a revolutionary whose Four Noble Truths remain applicable today. Buddhists believe that nothing is perfect nor certain, that everything is illusory, and that all sentient beings are Buddha. The Buddhist view can liberate us from false assumptions in this age of identity politics and obsession with self-improvement. Ethical conduct in Buddhism has three categories: avoiding unwholesome actions, developing wholesome activities and benefitting others, but ultimately includes anything that takes us closer to the truth. Always remember that wisdom or truth is the driver of the car, compassion is in the passenger seat and ethics is at the back.

Speaking in Jakarta in 2017, Dzongsar Khyentse Rinpoche distinguishes Buddhism from its cultural containers. The essence of Buddhism is beyond cultural assumptions of serene “holy men” and a paradise-like “nirvana.”. It is to recognize the “raw simple truth” that is with you all the time. This includes the truth that all compounded things are impermanent and that all of our experience is conditional, dependent and therefore unreliable and dream-like. Accepting these truths is what it means to be a Buddhist.

Rinpoche explained how the great enemy to recognizing the truth is our habit, and this habit is fueled by distraction. Cultivating awareness of our direct experience - what we see, hear, taste and touch – is “bad news to our habit” because it confuses our usual chain of distracted thought.
