Calling The Guru from Afar, 30 June - 1 July 2010, Menz, Germany

In his commentary on this important mindfulness teaching by the great nineteenth-century rimé (non-sectarian) master, Jamgön Kongtrül Lodrö Thaye, Dzongsar Khyentse Rinpoche explains that guru devotion, or “calling to the guru” is a technique to attack our habit of self-cherishing. The text can be depressing as it clearly details all our negative habits, yet the most profound teachings are those that disturb rather than inspire us. We repeatedly call on the guru to recognize us because we do not see that the guru is always with us. We ask for the blessings of the guru to cut through our pride, ego-clinging and dualistic vision. Through supplicating the guru, our intellectual understanding of the dharma can develop into the confidence that ultimately the guru is none other than buddhanature: the fundamental nature of our mind.

The Buddha is a revolutionary whose Four Noble Truths remain applicable today. Buddhists believe that nothing is perfect nor certain, that everything is illusory, and that all sentient beings are Buddha. The Buddhist view can liberate us from false assumptions in this age of identity politics and obsession with self-improvement. Ethical conduct in Buddhism has three categories: avoiding unwholesome actions, developing wholesome activities and benefitting others, but ultimately includes anything that takes us closer to the truth. Always remember that wisdom or truth is the driver of the car, compassion is in the passenger seat and ethics is at the back.

On July 19, 2015, at the invitation of UC Berkeley Center for Buddhist Studies in partnership with Khyentse Foundation and Siddhartha’s Intent Western Door, Dzongsar Jamyang Khyentse Rinpoche gave a talk entitled, “Is There Buddhism Without Rebirth?” on the UC Berkeley campus.

These days, many westerners view reincarnation as irrelevant to their engagement in Buddhism. Yet, for centuries, Buddhist texts have been filled with warnings about those who deny the existence of rebirth and the ethical ramifications of such views. How are we to understand such warnings? And if we discard what many consider to be “cultural trappings” to what is essential about Buddhism, what is left of a religion that teaches the lack of any independent existence?

In this talk, Rinpoche specifically addresses those Buddhists with materialistic, Abrahamic, or Brahmanic tendencies. Using the framework of relative truth and ultimate truth, Rinpoche expounds on how reincarnation fits the definition of valid relative truth, being usable on the relative level. Rinpoche also goes into detail about how, through Buddhist study, objects can be validated.  Also covered in this talk are: the main purpose of Buddhist teachings, concepts of direct teaching vs. expedient teaching, and union of relative truth and ultimate truth.

On February 28, 2013, at the invitation of Chokyi Nyima Rinpoche, Dzongsar Jamyang Khyentse Rinpoche gave a teaching on "Je Tsongkhapa's Instructions" to the students of Rangjung Yeshe Institute in Ka-Ning Shedrub Ling, Kathmandu, Nepal.

Rinpoche taught Je Tsongkhapa's famous text in verse, "The Three Principles of the Path".  He expounded on the three essential features of the path to enlightenment: renunciation, Bodhicitta and wisdom, as well as the relationship between them.
