Teachings given on March 8, 2013 by Lama Tsering Gyaltsen, a founding teacher, at Saraha Nyingma Buddhist Institute in Eugene, Oregon, USA on the subject "The Six Bardo's - The Intermediate States of Existence" 

“Bardo” is a Tibetan word meaning literally “between two,” which in Buddhism refers to the idea that within Samsara all states of existence are not static, but are actually continuous, successive, ordered facets of beginningless transition.  What we usually refer to as “life and death” are only two among the six bardos that are traditionally enumerated. 

Each Bardo has its own form of expression and development, and each presents beings with unique opportunities for the realization of enlightenment, or for advancement toward enlightenment, or conversely for decline into greater suffering.  Bardo teachings such as these are an important key to knowing where we are, which way to go, and  how to proceed.

On February 28, 2013, at the invitation of Chokyi Nyima Rinpoche, Dzongsar Jamyang Khyentse Rinpoche gave a teaching on "Je Tsongkhapa's Instructions" to the students of Rangjung Yeshe Institute in Ka-Ning Shedrub Ling, Kathmandu, Nepal.

Rinpoche taught Je Tsongkhapa's famous text in verse, "The Three Principles of the Path".  He expounded on the three essential features of the path to enlightenment: renunciation, Bodhicitta and wisdom, as well as the relationship between them.

仁波切系統講解了宗喀巴大師所著的《三主要道頌》，闡明了通往證悟之道的三個要素，即出離心、菩提心和空性見的內涵，以及這三者之間的關聯。

Although the Buddha taught only one ultimate truth, because listeners of the teachings come from a wide variety of backgrounds, minds and elements, there are many different sutras.  Here, Rinpoche presents the Thousand Hands Sutra, revisiting it for many reasons: one being because it’s very popular in Korea and another, because it is one of the most celebrated sutras of theTang Dynasty in of China.  In this particular sutra, the Buddha talks about the dharani (mantra) of Avalokiteshvara (Bodhisattva of Great Compassion).  Reading and/or saying this dharani out loud, you can accumulate a lot of merit.  And Rinpoche teaches on the meaning and character of this dharani, which in essence is its great compassion.

Calling The Guru from Afar, 30 June - 1 July 2010, Menz, Germany

In his commentary on this important mindfulness teaching by the great nineteenth-century rimé (non-sectarian) master, Jamgön Kongtrül Lodrö Thaye, Dzongsar Khyentse Rinpoche explains that guru devotion, or “calling to the guru” is a technique to attack our habit of self-cherishing. The text can be depressing as it clearly details all our negative habits, yet the most profound teachings are those that disturb rather than inspire us. We repeatedly call on the guru to recognize us because we do not see that the guru is always with us. We ask for the blessings of the guru to cut through our pride, ego-clinging and dualistic vision. Through supplicating the guru, our intellectual understanding of the dharma can develop into the confidence that ultimately the guru is none other than buddhanature: the fundamental nature of our mind.

Buddhist education for modern society, 23 March 2014 - Penang, Malaysia

"Study — hearing, contemplation, education — of Buddhism is so important. If we lose this, temples, stupas, monasteries, statues, they are just going to become a monument."

Modern mainstream education teaches us how to listen but not how to hear, how to look but not how to see, how to think but not how to be aware. It teaches us how to get caught, how to get entangled but not how to disentangle ourselves. It doesn't teach us happiness. We learn from books to pass exams, to get a degree and get a job. So how do we tap into the inexhaustible wealth of buddhist wisdom? How do we reconnect with ourselves and our environment?

Rinpoche addressed all these issues at Than Hsiang Temple in Penang at the invitation of Venerable Wei Wu, recipient of Khyentse Foundation's 2020 Khyentse Fellowship Award in recognition of his outstanding contribution to the promotion of Buddhadharma and buddhist education.
