In this modern world we are more interconnected than ever before, yet people seem to be more lonely than they were in the past. Dzongsar Khyentse Rinpoche addresses this problem through a buddhist lens by asking the questions, “Who is lonely?” and “What is loneliness?” This leads to an analysis of the nature of the self, and the subjectivity of our perceptions. Finally, practical suggestions are made for how we can liberate ourselves from loneliness.

Am I dead or am I dreaming? 👻  

Bardo teachings are commonly believed to be concerned with death but in fact encompass the whole of the Buddha’s teachings. The Tibetan word bardo refers to an intermediate state, between past and future, a crossing or a junction, in which a decision has to be made. This place of decision, this cognizance, is the bardo. This bardo is none other than our buddhanature, innately perfect, which the bardo practices lead us to uncover and reveal. Dzongsar Khyentse Rinpoche explains the bardo states and their associated practices, drawing on commentaries by Kyabje Dudjom Rinpoche and Tsele Natsok Rangdrol.

Manjushree manifests in many forms. He may be white, orange or black and may appear on a lion or holding a sword and a book. He can be human or non-human, a garden or a bridge. Any place where we feel closer to the truth is also an emanation of Manjushree. But only when we free ourselves from the distinctions of outward appearances and the concepts of time and permanence, can we really be introduced to Manjushree. Understanding that phenomena appear but they have no intrinsic existence is the true nature of Manjushree and the essence of all the buddhas.

Invited to visit the city of Vaiśālī, which has been ravaged by a terrible epidemic, the Buddha instructs Ānanda to stand at the city’s gate and recite a proclamation, a long mantra, and some verses that powerfully evoke spiritual well-being. Ānanda does so, and the epidemic comes to an end. One of the mahāsūtras related to the literature of the Vinaya, this text, like other accounts of the incident, has traditionally been recited during times of personal or collective illness, bereavement, and other difficulties.
