Practising vipassana is all about experiencing life directly. Sadhana is a systematic means to reach a goal. Though traditional sadhana practice might involve ritual offerings and visualisation of deities, the ultimate goal is to have this direct experience. Traditionally, vipassana practice is associated with sitting straight and focusing on the breath. This practice has much merit and should be upheld, but to apply vipassana in the modern world we need to adopt a much more abundant and infinite approach. We need to train our minds through the contemplation of impermanence, “unsatisfactoriness” (dukkha) and emptiness to find the courage to go outside our comfort zones, to see the world as it is and find liberation through a direct experience of the truth.

Advice for Spiritual Practice LTR 2011-09-07

This profound teaching on Kyabje Dudjom Rinpoche's "Lama Gyangpo (Calling the Lama from Afar)" was given by Lama Tharchin Rinpoche on July 16, 1998, at Pema Ösel Ling. The text is a Guru Yoga song of realization (doha), based on the Dzogchen tradition. 

The teaching explores the essential role of Guru Yoga in realizing the ultimate nature of mind, emphasizing that according to Dudjom Rinpoche, Guru Yoga is the most effective technique for recognizing rigpa (awareness). Lama Tharchin Rinpoche explains the three levels of guru (outer, inner, and secret), the crucial importance of faith and devotion, and how the ultimate guru is inseparable from one's own Buddha nature.
