Signals From The North - Wailing Ghosts II

This is a live recording of my friend Peter Mangalore playing records just over 10 years ago at a night we used to do called Road to Rimini in Newcastle upon Tyne. Peter was the main DJ and played the final hour after Wee DJs live slot. It was an off shoot night called Face Your Fate which took place in the Northumberland Arms a literal underground boozer - the DJ set up by day served as a hot plate that would keep mince & dumplings warm for high street shoppers and Newcastle's professional shoplifting community. It was the perfect set up for Peter. 

Peter died this weekend. He was 42.

Never got round to uploading this mix. This night was very special as it was the first time me and my mates had met Peter, we became firm friends after this and he would visit us up in the North East regularly. Pete had friends in the North East that loved him very much.

We had originally connected through mutual friends - Ali Renault and the Human Shield Record Company crew/Magic Waves crowd who we had met a year previously. 

It's an understatement to say Peter was unique. He was a true outsider, supreme raconteur and a lot of fun to be around. We became very close. 

When on form and positive, he was a supreme force for good and an amazing individual. His enthusiasm for people, his generosity, talking to animals ('Alreet myeet'), seeing the absolute wonder in the most mundane and oblique shit - a champion of the weirdo.

For the last few years Peter struggled with addictions and really poor health. At his peak though he was a mercurial force, egoless when it came to music and a generous creative talent. The loss of Peter will be felt by loads of folk especially in the North of England. He had a giant personality.

I always felt this mix summed him up perfectly, a true outsider with a immense talent and raw energy. A live mix can really put you back in a time and place, especially when you can hear the crowd through the needles, it's an emotional mix for me and a proper time capsule of emotion and feelings.

He had an incredible influence on me and introduced me and my peers and friends to so much good music - not just dance stuff. Peter saw the cracks in the reality tunnel and I owe him a great deal. Life was never dull around Peter.
