The song describes a demobilized soldier who is being haunted by the memories of attacking enemy caravans, - this was a primary activity of soviet reconnaissance and spetsnaz units esp. between periods of 1984-1988 as part of Operation ''Curtain'' (Zavesa). Paratrooper platoons would get inserted by helicopters at ''caravan routes'' and set up ambushes on caravans traveling from Pakistan carrying weapons, money, ammunition, and other supplies for mujahiddeen. This tactic was very successful, - although many times the small platoons of soviet troops, being isolated from main forces, had to sustain enemy attacks that considerably prevailed in numbers. Thus are the lyrics ''my friend was forever taken by the caravan''. One such tragic episode occured on October 31 1987 to a spetsnaz group commanded by Lt Onischuk of 186 spetsnaz battalion (186 ооспн) near Shah-joy in Zabul province. Him as well as Sgt Islamov were awarded the star of Hero of Soviet Union (both posthumously).
