"Follow the Drinking Gourd,” refers to a hollowed out gourd used by rural Americans and Slaves in the 19th Century as a water dipper.  It also became a code name for the Big Dipper star formation, which points to the North Star.  According to legend, fugitive slaves (with the help of Harriet Tubman and other Conductors on the Underground Railroad like Peg Leg Joe) would follow this secret map to Freedom that was passed down by word of mouth and through song.  The map de-coded would lead American Slaves, after wintertime, past the Tombigbee, Tennessee and Ohio Rivers toward Canada.

"After the Rain" is a metaphorical song acknowledging a coming storm that becomes a moment of change or enlightenment.   It is sung by the amazing Nova Y. Payton in the show.  The last lyrics of the song,  "After the rain is gone, after we've been standing here for oh so long, maybe, we'll know" sums it all up.
