Maaroo, First Mehla:

ਮੁਲ ਖਰੀਦੀ ਲਾਲਾ ਗੋਲਾ ਮੇਰਾ ਨਾਉ ਸਭਾਗਾ ॥
(ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ!) ਜਦੋਂ ਤੋਂ ਗੁਰੂ ਨੇ ਮੈਨੂੰ ਤੇਰਾ ਪ੍ਰੇਮ ਦੇ ਕੇ ਉਸਦੇ ਵੱਟੇ ਵਿਚ ਮੇਰਾ ਆਪਾ-ਭਾਵ ਖ਼ਰੀਦ ਲਿਆ ਹੈ, ਮੈਂ ਤੇਰਾ ਦਾਸ ਹੋ ਗਿਆ ਹਾਂ, ਮੈਂ ਤੇਰਾ ਗ਼ੁਲਾਮ ਹੋ ਗਿਆ ਹਾਂ, ਮੈਨੂੰ ਦੁਨੀਆ ਭੀ ਭਾਗਾਂ ਵਾਲਾ ਆਖਣ ਲੱਗ ਪਈ ਹੈ ।
I am Your slave, Your bonded servant, and so I am called fortunate.

ਗੁਰ ਕੀ ਬਚਨੀ ਹਾਟਿ ਬਿਕਾਨਾ ਜਿਤੁ ਲਾਇਆ ਤਿਤੁ ਲਾਗਾ ॥੧॥
ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਦਰ ਤੇ ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਉਪਦੇਸ਼ ਦੇ ਇਵਜ਼ ਮੈਂ ਆਪਾ-ਭਾਵ ਦੇ ਦਿੱਤਾ ਹੈ, ਹੁਣ ਜਿਸ ਕੰੰਮ ਵਿਚ ਮੈਨੂੰ ਗੁਰੂ ਲਾਉਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਉਸੇ ਕੰਮ ਵਿਚ ਮੈਂ ਲੱਗਾ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹਾਂ ।੧।
I sold myself at Your store in exchange for the Guru's Word; whatever You link me to, to that I am linked. ||1||

ਤੇਰੇ ਲਾਲੇ ਕਿਆ ਚਤੁਰਾਈ ॥
(ਪਰ ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ!) ਮੈਨੂੰ ਤੇਰੇ ਗ਼ੁਲਾਮ ਨੂੰ ਅਜੇ ਪੂਰੀ ਸਮਝ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੈ,
What cleverness can Your servant try with You?

ਸਾਹਿਬ ਕਾ ਹੁਕਮੁ ਨ ਕਰਣਾ ਜਾਈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
ਮੈਥੋਂ, ਹੇ ਸਾਹਿਬ! ਤੇਰਾ ਹੁਕਮ ਪੂਰੇ ਤੌਰ ਤੇ ਸਿਰੇ ਨਹੀਂ ਚੜ੍ਹਦਾ (ਅਕਲ ਤਾਂ ਇਹ ਚਾਹੀਦੀ ਸੀ ਕਿ ਸੇਵਾ ਹੁਕਮ ਤੋਂ ਵਧੀਕ ਕੀਤੀ ਜਾਏ; ਪਰ ਵਾਧਾ ਕਰਨਾ ਤਾਂ ਕਿਤੇ ਰਿਹਾ, ਪੂਰੀ ਭੀ ਨਿਬਾਹੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਜਾਂਦੀ) ।੧।ਰਹਾਉ।
O my Lord and Master, I cannot carry out the Hukam of Your Command. ||1||Pause||

ਮਾ ਲਾਲੀ ਪਿਉ ਲਾਲਾ ਮੇਰਾ ਹਉ ਲਾਲੇ ਕਾ ਜਾਇਆ ॥
(ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ ਮੇਹਰ ਨਾਲ) ਤੇਰੇ ਹੁਕਮ ਵਿਚ ਤੁਰਨ ਵਾਲੀ (ਮੇਰੀ ਮਤਿ ਬਣੀ ਉਸ ਮਤਿ-) ਮਾਂ (ਨੇ ਮੈਨੂੰ ਸੇਵਕ-ਜੀਵਨ ਵਾਲਾ ਜਨਮ ਦਿੱਤਾ), (ਤੇਰਾ ਬਖ਼ਸ਼ਿਆ ਸੰਤੋਖ) ਮੇਰਾ ਪਿਉ ਬਣਿਆ । ਮੈਨੂੰ (ਮੇਰੇ ਸੇਵਕ-ਸੁਭਾਵ ਨੂੰ) ਸੰਤੋਖ-ਪਿਉ ਤੋਂ ਹੀ ਜਨਮ ਮਿਲਿਆ । 
My mother is Your slave, and my father is Your slave; I am the child of Your slaves.

ਲਾਲੀ ਨਾਚੈ ਲਾਲਾ ਗਾਵੈ ਭਗਤਿ ਕਰਉ ਤੇਰੀ ਰਾਇਆ ॥੨॥
ਹੁਣ, ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ! ਜਿਉਂ ਜਿਉਂ ਮੈਂ ਤੇਰੀ ਭਗਤੀ ਕਰਦਾ ਹਾਂ ਮੇਰੀ ਮਾਂ (-ਮਤਿ) ਹੁਲਾਰੇ ਵਿਚ ਆਉਂਦੀ ਹੈ, ਮੇਰਾ ਪਿਉ (-ਸੰਤੋਖ) ਉਛਾਲੇ ਮਾਰਦਾ ਹੈ ।੨।
My slave mother dances, and my slave father sings; I practice devotional worship to You, O my Sovereign Lord. ||2||

ਪੀਅਹਿ ਤ ਪਾਣੀ ਆਣੀ ਮੀਰਾ ਖਾਹਿ ਤ ਪੀਸਣ ਜਾਉ ॥
ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ! ਮੈਨੂੰ ਤਾਂ ਸਮਝ ਨਹੀਂ ਕਿ ਮੈਂ ਕਿਸ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਤੇਰਾ ਹੁਕਮ ਪੂਰੇ ਤੌਰ ਤੇ ਕਮਾ ਸਕਾਂ, ਪਰ ਜੇ ਤੂੰ ਮੇਹਰ ਕਰੇਂ ਤਾਂ) ਹੇ ਪਾਤਿਸ਼ਾਹ! ਮੈਂ ਤੇਰੇ (ਬੰਦਿਆਂ) ਲਈ ਪੀਣ ਵਾਸਤੇ ਪਾਣੀ ਢੋਵਾਂ, ਤੇਰੇ (ਬੰਦਿਆਂ ਦੇ) ਖਾਣ ਵਾਸਤੇ ਚੱਕੀ ਪੀਹਾਂ,
If You wish to drink, then I shall get water for You; if You wish to eat, I shall grind the corn for You.

ਪਖਾ ਫੇਰੀ ਪੈਰ ਮਲੋਵਾ ਜਪਤ ਰਹਾ ਤੇਰਾ ਨਾਉ ॥੩॥
ਪੱਖਾ ਫੇਰਾਂ, ਤੇਰੇ (ਬੰਦਿਆਂ ਦੇ) ਪੈਰ ਘੱੁਟਾਂ, ਤੇ ਸਦਾ ਤੇਰਾ ਨਾਮ ਜਪਦਾ ਰਹਾਂ ।੩।
I wave the fan over You, and wash Your feet, and continue to chant Your Name. ||3||

ਲੂਣ ਹਰਾਮੀ ਨਾਨਕੁ ਲਾਲਾ ਬਖਸਿਹਿ ਤੁਧੁ ਵਡਿਆਈ ॥
(ਪਰ ਹੇ ਦਇਆ ਦੇ ਮਾਲਕ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ!) ਤੇਰਾ ਗ਼ੁਲਾਮ ਨਾਨਕ ਤੇਰੀ ਉਤਨੀ ਖ਼ਿਦਮਤ ਨਹੀਂ ਕਰ ਸਕਦਾ ਜਿਤਨੀਆਂ ਤੂੰ ਬਖ਼ਸ਼ਸ਼ਾਂ ਕਰ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈਂ (ਤੇਰਾ ਗ਼ੁਲਾਮ) ਤੇਰੀਆਂ ਬਖ਼ਸ਼ਸ਼ਾਂ ਦੇ ਮੋਹ ਵਿਚ ਹੀ ਫਸ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਖ਼ਿਦਮਤ ਕਰਾਣ ਵਾਸਤੇ ਭੀ ਜੇ ਤੂੰ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਮੇਹਰ ਕਰੇਂ (ਤਾਂ ਮੈਂ ਖ਼ਿਦਮਤ ਕਰ ਸਕਾਂਗਾ, ਇਸ ਵਿਚ ਭੀ) ਤੇਰੀ ਹੀ ਜੈ-ਜੈਕਾਰ ਹੋਵੇਗੀ । 
I have been untrue to myself, but Nanak is Your slave; please forgive him, by Your glorious greatness.

ਆਦਿ ਜੁਗਾਦਿ ਦਇਆਪਤਿ ਦਾਤਾ ਤੁਧੁ ਵਿਣੁ ਮੁਕਤਿ ਨ ਪਾਈ ॥੪॥੬॥
ਤੂੰ ਸ਼ੁਰੂ ਤੋਂ ਹੀ ਜੁਗਾਂ ਦੇ ਸ਼ੁਰੂ ਤੋਂ ਹੀ ਦਇਆ ਦਾ ਮਾਲਕ ਹੈਂ ਦਾਤਾਂ ਦੇਂਦਾ ਆਇਆ ਹੈਂ (ਇਹਨਾਂ ਦਾਤਾਂ ਦੇ ਮੋਹ ਤੋਂ) ਖ਼ਲਾਸੀ ਤੇਰੀ ਸਹੈਤਾ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੋ ਸਕਦੀ ।੪।੬।
Since the very beginning of time, and throughout the ages, You have been the merciful and generous Lord. Without You, liberation cannot be attained. ||4||6||
