ਆਸਾ ਮਹਲਾ ੫ ॥
Aasaa, Fifth Mehla:

ਉਕਤਿ ਸਿਆਨਪ ਕਿਛੂ ਨ ਜਾਨਾ ॥
ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ! ਮੈਂ ਕੋਈ ਦਲੀਲ (ਦੇਣੀ) ਨਹੀਂ ਜਾਣਦਾ ਮੈਂ ਕੋਈ ਸਿਆਣਪ (ਦੀ ਗੱਲ ਕਰਨੀ) ਨਹੀਂ ਜਾਣਦਾ ਜਿਸ ਨਾਲ ਮੈਂ ਤੈਨੂੰ ਖ਼ੁਸ਼ ਕਰ ਸਕਾਂ, 
I know nothing of arguments or cleverness.

ਦਿਨੁ ਰੈਣਿ ਤੇਰਾ ਨਾਮੁ ਵਖਾਨਾ ॥੧॥
ਪਰ ਤੇਰੀ ਹੀ ਮੇਹਰ ਨਾਲ ਮੈਂ ਦਿਨ ਰਾਤ ਤੇਰਾ (ਹੀ) ਨਾਮ ਉਚਾਰਦਾ ਹਾਂ ।੧।
Day and night, I chant Your Name. ||1||

ਮੈ ਨਿਰਗੁਨ ਗੁਣੁ ਨਾਹੀ ਕੋਇ ॥
ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ! ਮੈਂ ਗੁਣ-ਹੀਣ ਹਾਂ, ਮੇਰੇ ਵਿਚ ਕੋਈ ਗੁਣ ਨਹੀਂ (ਜਿਸ ਦੇ ਆਸਰੇ ਮੈਂ ਤੈਨੂੰ ਪ੍ਰਸੰਨ ਕਰਨ ਦੀ ਆਸ ਕਰ ਸਕਾਂ)
I am worthless; I have no virtue at all.

ਕਰਨ ਕਰਾਵਨਹਾਰ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਸੋਇ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਉਹ ਤੂੰ ਹੀ ਹੈਂ ਜੋ (ਸਭ ਜੀਵਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਵਿਆਪਕ ਹੋ ਕੇ ਆਪ ਹੀ) ਸਭ ਕੁਝ ਕਰਨ ਦੀ ਤਾਕਤ ਰੱਖਦਾ ਹੈਂ ਤੇ (ਸਭ ਜੀਵਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਪ੍ਰੇਰ ਕੇ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਪਾਸੋਂ) ਕਰਾਣ ਦੀ ਸਮਰੱਥਾ ਵਾਲਾ ਹੈਂ (ਮੈਨੂੰ ਭੀ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਆਪਣੇ ਚਰਨਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਜੋੜੀ ਰੱਖ) ।੧।ਰਹਾਉ।
God is the Creator, the Cause of all causes. ||1||Pause||

ਮੂਰਖ ਮੁਗਧ ਅਗਿਆਨ ਅਵੀਚਾਰੀ ॥
ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ! ਮੈਂ ਮੂਰਖ ਹਾਂ, ਮੈਂ ਮਤਿ-ਹੀਣ ਹਾਂ, ਮੈਂ ਗਿਆਨ-ਹੀਣ ਹਾਂ, ਮੈਂ ਬੇ-ਸਮਝ ਹਾਂ 
I am foolish, stupid, ignorant and thoughtless;

ਨਾਮ ਤੇਰੇ ਕੀ ਆਸ ਮਨਿ ਧਾਰੀ ॥੨॥
(ਪਰ ਤੂੰ ਆਪਣੇ ਬਿਰਦ ਦੀ ਲਾਜ ਰੱਖਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਹੈਂ), ਮੈਂ ਤੇਰੇ (ਬਿਰਦ-ਪਾਲ) ਨਾਮ ਦੀ ਆਸ ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਰੱਖੀ ਹੋਈ ਹੈ (ਕਿ ਤੂੰ ਸਰਨ-ਆਏ ਦੀ ਲਾਜ ਰੱਖੇਂਗਾ) ।੨।
Your Name is my mind's only hope. ||2||

ਜਪੁ ਤਪੁ ਸੰਜਮੁ ਕਰਮ ਨ ਸਾਧਾ ॥
ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਮੈਂ ਕੋਈ ਜਪ ਨਹੀਂ ਕੀਤਾ, ਮੈਂ ਕੋਈ ਤਪ ਨਹੀਂ ਕੀਤਾ, ਮੈਂ ਕੋਈ ਸੰਜਮ ਨਹੀਂ ਸਾਧਿਆ (ਮੈਨੂੰ ਕਿਸੇ ਜਪ ਤਪ ਸੰਜਮ ਦਾ ਸਹਾਰਾ ਨਹੀਂ, ਮਾਣ ਨਹੀਂ)
I have not practiced chanting, deep meditation, self-discipline or good actions;

ਨਾਮੁ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਕਾ ਮਨਹਿ ਅਰਾਧਾ ॥੩॥
ਮੈਂ ਤਾਂ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਹੀ ਆਪਣੇ ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਯਾਦ ਕਰਦਾ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹਾਂ ।੩।
but within my mind, I have worshipped God's Name. ||3||

ਕਿਛੂ ਨ ਜਾਨਾ ਮਤਿ ਮੇਰੀ ਥੋਰੀ ॥
ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ! (ਕੋਈ ਉਕਤਿ, ਕੋਈ ਸਿਆਣਪ, ਕੋਈ ਜਪ, ਕੋਈ ਤਪ, ਕੋਈ ਸੰਜਮ) ਕੁਝ ਭੀ ਕਰਨਾ ਨਹੀਂ ਜਾਣਦਾ, ਮੇਰੀ ਅਕਲ ਬਹੁਤ ਮਾੜੀ ਜਿਹੀ ਹੈ,
I know nothing, and my intellect is inadequate.

ਬਿਨਵਤਿ ਨਾਨਕ ਓਟ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਤੋਰੀ ॥੪॥੧੮॥੬੯॥
ਨਾਨਕ ਬੇਨਤੀ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ—ਮੈਂ ਸਿਰਫ਼ ਤੇਰਾ ਹੀ ਆਸਰਾ ਲਿਆ ਹੈ ।੪।੧੮।੬੯।

Abh Hum Chali Thakur, Raag Devgandhari (Bhai Nirmal Singh Khalsa Ji)

Born at village Mulla Hamza in Montgomery District (now in Pakistan) in 1900 A.D., Bhai Samund Singh was given training in music by his father Bhai Hazur Singh Ji from his early child-hood. As a little boy he won a number of prizes and distinctions at musical concerts. He came to be known as 'Kaka Samund Singh' and was much in demand at Sikh congregations. His party came to be known as the best in the understanding of their art and almost perfect in presentation of Gurbani Kirtan. With his unique melo-dious voice, an extensive and deep understanding of Gur-bani, correct interpretation of ragas, attractive style of sing-ing and great human qualities, he reigned supreme for sixty years in the world of Gurbani Kirtan. He performed kirtan at the Gurdwara Janam Sthan, Sri Nankana Sahib, the birth place of Guru Nanak Dev, for many years. He broadcast kirtan for 36 years from All India Radio, Lahore and later from Jalandhar and commanded wide listening. Passers-by stopped in the streets to listen to his kirtan irrespective of their faith. He was invited to perform kirtan in the National Programme of Music by All India Radio, the highest recognition of his art. He was given State award by the Punjab Government in 1971. He passed away at Ludhiana (5th January, 1972).
