In the wake of the Affliction, the UN authorizes an AI entity to be brought online to help find a cure.  Under these circumstances, the AI treaty is temporarily suspended and world leaders agree to fall under UN leadership in the matter.  Dr Angelo Lombardi, the lead authority on AI development, is called upon to bring his creation online.  The most advanced AI system ever built.  An entity known as Gaia.
