Vision of 1994 - Concrete Memories

One of the most lasting imprints which soviet occupation left on identities of hundreds of thousands, if not millions, of people is something we all usually perceive as ordinary or boring, insignificant almost. The concrete dys-utopia of the prefab housing, built by the communists in the 2nd half of the previous century was a place of coming-of-age for many. Endless blocks of flats, parched public places, the unfulfilled modernity’s idea of a community life, but also a vast playground for the youngest, whose imagination didn’t let them settle. Growing up in one of those imaginary worlds himself, Czech producer Vision of 1994 taps into the post-soviet collective memory on his ‘Concrete Memories’ album, released as a six-track vinyl and a full-length digital on Prague’s Harmless Youth label. He takes his childhood and teenage memories as a point of departure, but transforms his recollections into an universal sonic realm, where anyone, even one without similar origins, might feel that nostalgic rush.

Vision of 1994 - Concrete Memories (HYLP001)

Prague's @Silhouette_Chik — AKA Chik, AKA Vision of 1994 — is something of a shapeshifter, and a DJ and producer who has played a pivotal role in the Czech nightlife scene for years. 'Hůrka', the second album under his Silhouette alias, arrives though Czech label @Dolec.

‘Defragmented Dream’ is the second half of Vision of 1994’s double album dedicated to his raising in middle class 90’s and early 00’s Czechia, and of his personal transformation in more recent years.

The first album ‘Concrete Memories’ was indebted to his childhood among the ‘pre-fab’ soviet tombstone tower blocks; growing up in the disillusioned socialist urban environments of the Eastern Bloc, of graffiti, parties, and running riot. ‘Defragmented Dream’ is his self-reflection, set in the here and now, on the inescapable demands of maturity and the troubled fulfilment of hand-me-down dreams of prior generations; the kid, the family, the house and car.

Vision pulls back the veils of youthful expectation. Reeling out of wild adolescence and on to the barren fruitlessness of adulthood proper, the fabric of the Dream is in sampling: repurposed memories painting dour false negatives of life.

Defragmented Dream may have its roots in the cold ground, but its upper reaches bathe in the sun. The good with the bad; bright days in gardens and long nights in basements. Keeping the darkness at bay with piecemeal happiness; smiling grim as we walk through the rain.
