Palindrome - No Evil [Palindrome Mix - Side]

PTU is a musical duo featuring Kamil EA and Alina Izolenta whose records were released on the Austrian label Laton and the Moscow-based record label Incompetence Records with a third release now coming up on the German cassette label Silhouette Tapes. 

PTU’s music could be characterized as a blend of related genres; an abstract joint where bass music meets techno with this mixture being spiced up with break beats, acid lines, pads, futuristic concepts and sounds. 

So, what does the abbreviation PTU mean? Born in the former Soviet Union, the musicians grew up in the 90's - a time when Western culture was getting more prevalent in the large country. After finishing the high school, not many young people from the working class could attend a university leaving them only few alternatives. PTUs (Professional Technical Schools) are - technically - educational facilities providing general education of the third degree. It is a Soviet social phenomenon, a clichéd concept and a cultural ghetto; but also a kind of a refuge for people when there’s nothing to do and you feel free before doing the military service or getting married - ideas and values imposed by the state machine.

Q/A:
- Where did your musical career start?
It was in 1996 in my home city Karlsruhe. Sitting in front of a minidisc player, me and my school buddies made loops recording them then on a tape. At that time already we played Garage House, Drum-n-Base and Ninja Tune shit creating crazy mix tapes with self-made samples and children’s records in the Studio from Nils, who runs the BigBait Records. Following a friend’s advice I laid my hands on an Atari computer from in my parents’ office. I installed Cubase, got synths and samples and from that time on there was no turning back.
- What genres influenced you the most?
There are too many to count … To be honest, the process of being influenced by music has never stopped. At the beginning, however, it was the 80s music from America, as I heard it playing out of American soldiers’ SUV’s, and film music such as Star Wars and The Never Ending Story - spherical stuff that touched me.
Then it was the east coast rap from the mid 90s, so-12 drums slick samples, the golden era and not to forget the entire experimental stuff from Ninja Tune and Rephlex. It really was other-worldly music coming over the sea from England. I also liked the „relaxation records“. I could listen to the sound of the rain for hours.
So, to sum things up, it was the time in the mid-, end 90s, as I was very open and influenceable at that time.
And wait a minute, I almost forgot Theo Parrish, the master of the masters!
- Could you describe your sound?
Well, it is always very subjective, a feeling I have when i’m making music, a search for good loops that carry me further till a music piece is created. It is hard to describe precisely, it just happens. Sometimes these are particular experiences, people, dreams or certain music that awake the urge in me to be creative. You could compare that with David Lynch.
The Scherbe-sound is not stressful, fast-paced but rather reflective and meditational without, however, giving up on loud drums and bass bins. I also like pitched-down sounds and when I randomly find some funny samples that loop away so to speak.
When I dj, I have more deliberate preferences that go away from the straight forward house sets. It is also depending on the kind of the event I play, the size of the club etc.
At the moment I love to play 7“ from the 80s thus going back to the my roots (Funk, Boogie, Reggae, Italo) but I’m also happy when I can play at chill out floors where there is no need of a beat or people dancing (the chill out rooms are back, aren’t they?).
- What are your sets about (musically or even narratively?)?
The mix is a very special experience. Last year I had the honor to open an outdoor floor of a 24h party (5 Years Uncanny Valley) at midnight. The guys from Uncanny asked we what kind of stuff I would like to play and I answered, Vaporwave (Wiki-Link: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vaporwave). They agreed and asked what that would be. I guess, a few people were surprised as the music didn’t correspond to their dancing expectations. I’ve been collecting masses of tracks on Bandcamp since 2014 that I just mixed together using two laptops and iTunes spicing everything up with effects from the good old Pioneer mixer.
I definitely wanted to beginn at the zero point starting with simple noises, nature, rain forest slowly bringing in melodies and recognizable loops and only after that beats and a certain amount of kitsch that is kind of a part of Vaporwave.
To a certain extent, it was important for me to present this genre or the internet-reddit-hype - whatever it is called in Germany - to a wider audience, just to play this kind of music. I, personally, was fascinated by this scene and the glitch-anime-segasaturn-aesthetics as well as by the its approach to unscrupulously use everything that sounds good when pitched down.
My podcast should be listened to when in the supermarket, smoking in the morning, when a video recorder hangs or when playing Pokemon shortly before being hit by a Range Rover!

1) Your name and pseudonym?:  - Viktor, rus27
2) Location?: - Moscow
3) How long have you been making music and how/why did you start?:  - It was in 2008 when I really started to listen to the electronic music and playing dj sets. In the beginging there was american music: 313 and Chicago; then Kraftwerk and many other German labels of different styles and paces from Berlin and Frankfurt plus Danny Wolferce’s works I’ve been following since the school days.
4) What musical style your mixtape is about? Was there a certain idea behind it (there must have been, aint it?) - When Pavel asked me to make a mixtape/podcast, I instantly had an idea that i wanted to realise. I think that my mixtape has a certain vibe that could fit well with Silhouette’s stylistic.
5) Why did you focus on synthi-pop in your mixtape?: -  Recently, I came across „Dark Entries“, a label that re-released many tracks I included into my mixtape. I also used to listen to Synthi-Pop and New-Wave before so it was exciting to use some of my favourite tracks for this mixtape.
 6) How long did you work on it?: - It took me one hour.
7) Did you use vinyl records or digital tracks?: - Digital tracks.
8) What type of music do you prefer listening in your spare time?: - It’s american rock music from 60s and 70s, italo disco, synthi-pop, ambient music.
9) Could you point out producers and labels whose works you’ve been following recently or that inspired you?: - That would be dutch producers such as I-F, Intergalactic Gary, as well as DEKMANTEL label; then the above mentioned Dark Entries, the radio show hosted by JD Twitch (Optimo) and the Russian label Gost Zvuk.

- two (German)

4. - Do you both make music or do you devide your tasks?
- Actually, our project is multidisciplinary. We wanted to unite things like visual art, installation and music. Lena does the visual part and I make music. Together we also work on different concepts.

5. - How long have you been making music and where are the origins?
- I've been making music since I was a kid. First, I played in bands, then I found some. At the age of 16 I found experimental music that attracted me with its combination of freedom of action and well thoguht concepts. During my studies in the U.S. I got into computers and all kinds of music software. From then on there was no turning back.

6. - How would you characterize the gerne of your podcast? Was there a certain idea befind it (there must have been, doesen't it?)?
- My sets consists of different genres such as ambient, electronical acoustic, and some experiments. I like this kind of sound. I think that maybe there is a lot of this genre being produced worldwide but you rarely happen to come across this kind of music in the everyday life, however, it could be the the best soundtrack to our existence. Also I included a lot of tracks from producers from the former Soviet Union who in my opinion have to heard in the world.

7. - How long did it take you to record the set?
- it took a while till I was done with the track selection. After that all went pretty quickly.

8. - What source material did you use?
- I used digital tracks

9. - What kind of music do you prefer listening in your free time?
- Different stuff. I rather go for artist than genres.

10. - How would you describe the scene in KZ? Are there certain tendencies to point out?
- It is difficult to describe the scene, as there is no scene as such. There are artist and dj's making their own thing but a proper scene still has to be created.

11. - What labels and artists do you like or could point out lately?
- That would be the labels and artist from the former Soviet Union. We were simply blown away by the fact that such good material is being produced next to us. Labels such as Klammklang, Shalash, Full of Nothing, Fuselab, Floe are definetely worth cheking out!

dadaisme is a project of Valerii Shevchenko, Russian musician and social theorist based in Moscow. His artistic work is informed with certain aspects of dadaist worldview - its socially provocative character which in his case in invisible, non-destructive nihilism and contingency as an artistic method. He makes music of different kinds which might be gathered under the umbrella term “experimental electronic” and addresses social and cultural problems in his art. 
“WIR” concerns the twofold idea. Firstly, it critiques the instrumental appropriation of this proverb by political elites and governments which use it for translation of cultural codes, social norms and values beneficial for them. From mobilization of citizens to identity control “we” might serve as an instrument of manipulation. Secondly, the idea of “WIR” is to reverse-engineer the concept of “we” and to show that the social origin of its referent is a small social group and, more specifically, certain kind of social ties between members of that group, namely love and friendship, as I believe. “We” designates the primordial social bond which might be opposed to “we” of a state. 
The title and the cover artwork of the album are designed to illustrate this opposition. They refer to extreme historical points of use of this pronoun by totalitarian states of XX century. “Worker and kolkhoz woman” is reimagined to represent not the symbols of the state values - a sickle and a hammer as referring to a utopian labour state - which are imposed and necessary for everyone but the volunteer unity of people in small groups and those primordial social ties - love and friendship. 
“WIR” then is a soundtrack for such volunteer social unity of people.

Silhouette Tapes -  Live Soundtrack For Leviathan

"Girl from Earth", 2005 by Chikiss

In 2004, in Vyborg, a small border town between Russia and Finland, I've met two guys Alexander Dubrovin and Alexander Belkov at a local music festival, they played very strange music on canisters and cassettes, which were mixed through Soviet reverbs - black metal boxes that could create endless sound loops. I also was fond of experimental music, and we have united in their project 188910. Later, in the cottage of guitarist Alexander Dubrovin, in neighboring border town  Primorsk, we started to play my songs - me and him. First, we wrote everything on cassette decks, recorded experiments, noises, sound loops, then on my first computer in St. Petersburg. By that time I had a synthesizer from the 90s - Roland JW-50, which had good sound of a piano. As a pianist without a piano at that moment I lacked the possibility just to play. I composed many songs, especially early ones, on an acoustic instrument. I started to master my first Acid PRO music sequencer, practicing recording these songs. Sasha has joined me with the guitar, also using this Soviet reverb, which created a magical sound background on the album. We've played and recorded it in one session, we still did not understand how to mix, so the sound is so raw and sometimes naive. But this record is dear to me with its melodies, freshness and sincerity. Recording this album, we did not make any plans for our musical future, we did not discuss it at all. It was a pure thrill from music and a new opportunity to do everything by yourself at home, not to depend on anyone. Only when this record got to the respected and cool Russian producers “Yolochnie Igrushki”, and they did our first concert, we realized that the musical history of “Chikiss”, as a project, then still collective, began.
