The prolific Eugene Ward is the man behind the monikers Dro Carey and Tuff Sherm. With a consistent list of releases - the first of which coming out on Trilogy Tapes whilst he was still in high school - the abundant output of Ward doesn't end there. His creative endeavours extend to videography and writing comic books. Citing loneliness and humour as prevalent inspirational themes, such sentiments are expressed cathartically, as Ward manages to make practical use of various pseudonyms to great proficiency. Whether it be the minimal Grime influenced sounds of Dro Carey, or the swampy experimental House under Tuff Sherm, Ward has earned the respect and admiration of many key left-field UK labels including Reckno, Merok Records and Opal Tapes.

His latest offering is the vinyl-only 'Smugglers Bureau' on Berceuse Heroique. The release sees Ward delve deeper in to the world of gritty House under his Tuff Sherm alias, bringing along the familiar characteristics of previous releases, this time adopting a noisier and crunchier aesthetic. The EP features two original tracks along with a remix from L.I.E.S affiliate Delroy Edwards.

Hyp 179 indulges us in wonderfully weird left-field world of House and Techno. Alongside a wealth of original material, the mix also features House cuts from Holdie Gawn and MGUN, a delicate jazzy acid piece from Joey Anderson and tracks from Techno contemporaries such as Clouds, Metrist and Hound Scales.

San Francisco-based - but originally from the UK - (Oliver) Vereker is already an established part of the L.I.E.S. family.With carefully chosen releases at 3 of the best up and coming new record labels, such as L.I.E.S. Records, The Trilogy Tapes and Berceuse Heroique and his collaboration with Florian Kupfer at Russian Torrent Versions, he has already accomplished to be part of the emerging artists in electronic scene of the other side of the world.He is also established this year his record label named .endangered species.

Phormix Podcast #1 Document •1• VEREKER

Always a city synonymous with its music scene, Bristol is setting the standard for many to follow these days, be it with the finely curated house and techno of Idle Hands, the seismic soundsystem manipulations of Livity Sound, abstract electronics of Young Echo and the No Corner label or the more reverential bassweight approach of Peng Sound. There’s a communal spirit linking these various institutions which is as apparent from the outside as it is when you spend some time speaking to those fully entrenched in the city.

It’s telling that Jacob Martin has managed to successfully find a niche for himself within Bristol both as part of Outboxx, the classicist house project with Matthew Lambert, and in a solo capacity as Hodge. His work in this latter capacity has really come on in strides for over the course of the past year or so, cultivating a murky, dark style of sub focused house and techno which has increased in impact with every release. Last year saw his profile raised considerably thanks to some strange, bass-heavy house hybrids made in collaboration with Peverelist, and a further solo release on Punch Drunk which contained two pieces of clattering, low end-fuelled techno. A subsequent debut for Livity Sound sister label Dnous Ytivil made perfect sense and featured perhaps our favourite Hodge production so far in the devastating dancefloor tool “Amor Fati”.

It’s been a good few months since we last caught the mood of Bristol in our podcast series, so it felt right to ask for a mix from Hodge, whose subsequent 50 minute set is filled with unreleased and forthcoming material from himself and contemporaries such as Beneath, Addison Groove, Tessela, Batu, Facta and Rhythmic Theory. In the days leading up to publication it was revealed Hodge would be gracing Berceuse Heroique with some music, and his plans for the future are among the questions he was kind enough to answer.
