In recent years, the term “tech-house” has taken on a whole new direction that has swayed some considerable distance from its origins. One of the early protagonists of this much-misunderstood sub-genre is Asad Rzvi aka Silverlining. His nineties deep, groovey garage tinged house is nothing short of seminal and appearing first on OG labels such as Wiggle and Wrong, Asad set a template for what would become such a huge sound of current times. I've recently realised that around 90% of my DJ sets from over the years are sitting on hard drives around the world and not online. So I've decided that, every month or so, I'll be uploading a blast from the past. For some the tunes will bring back warm memories (myself especially), and for others, it's a taster of how we used to do Deep House. This is a set I recorded at Studio FM in New Zealand, whilst on my second tour over there back in 2003. Hope you enjoy!

Last week's Ode to Nat at Wiggle was a moment of pure and electric bliss that wholesomely reanimated the original spirit of Wiggle as it did the ethos of its dear, late co-founders Nathan and Lou. Their contagious grins could be felt filling what remaining space was left between the dancers. I arrived exhausted after an 11-hour door-to-door journey from Romania, but the energy from all the faces, familiar and new, quickly swept all that away. Unsurprisingly, Fabian and Josh clearly have it in their blood to pick up the baton from their parents under the guidance of Terry. Everyone who I heard played impeccable sets, but I'm just gutted I didn't get to catch the boys with Harvey under their 3 minds alias earlier on, but I heard it was on point as ever. Wiggle is back, and long may it thrive! Oi oi!

“I recorded this mix at home using just a pair of Technics and a Mastersounds mixer. For this one, I wanted to explore the darker side of my sound while trying to keep it emotive. It moves around through breakbeat house, deep techno, early progressive, acid, detroit and electro; all of which have inspired me since the beginning and I still love playing today. 

I’ll most likely be playing along these lines on the 12th. Room 1 is always a joy to play in, and I’m beyond excited to test out new system upgrade!”

Various friends have been asking me about this mix for years, as 'back in the day' it was distributed on cassette tape, and of course, no one knows where their tapes are anymore. Having made two attempts to retrieve the original recording through my DAT boxes, I had resigned to the possibility that it was forever lost. However, a visit to my parents' home last weekend, where most of my records and old studio stuff are, yielded the DAT in the most elusive of locations. Yay! So here's an old one with the some old faves that some will recall. Others might be hearing them for the first time. I hope you enjoy, either way!

I just had the first listen in a long time to this remix I was lucky enough to work on in 2006 of the mighty Blaze, famed for Lovelee Dae & Can Your Dance to My Beat. These guys are responsible for so much great New Jersey house music during the early 90s' and it was truly an honour to work on Alexander Pope's vocal on this. This a lot more vocal than a lot of my Silverlining stuff, but still pure underground house music from the heart. When involved in any genre that ends in the word HOUSE, it's important to remember the cultural and historical contexts whence it came. Vocals like this have always been a part of house music since day one. Thanks to JB for hooking this up back then.

Rather than mixing beats, this one is mixed purely by vibe; a totally different way of playing that's so much fun. <3

Sometimes there is nothing more nourishing than playing your finest old house music gems. This is an hour-and-a-half recording of an extended mix-up recorded at an afterhours at home to a loved bunch of friends.

'Celebrating his 25th year as a producer and DJ, London’s Silverlining announces his first ever double-vinyl artist album, ‘Simulacra’, a brand new collection of emotive yet powerful body music from his South London studio. Known for his diverse and bassline-driven grooves, this work sees him straddle between the stripped-back house and techno that we have come to adore on his acclaimed Silverlining Dubs series, with eclectic forays into territories of electronic musicality unexplored by him until now. Adopting a similar analogue workflow and kit-list to that used for his 1990s productions, the collection retains his trademark sonic brilliance, whilst demonstrating, once again, that his ideas are far from running out.
 

Subtly interwoven into its mood and lyrics, the album explores themes of dependence on misrecognised digital identities, and the importance of real world tangibility. Adopting Jean Baudrillard’s definition of the word ‘simulacra’ — “the generation by models of a real without origin or reality” — the tracks and vinyl have been given abstracted nomenclature to allow for the listener to infer their own meanings and order of play. “We’re in the midst of a turning point”, Silverlining states, “where nearness and authenticity are more valuable than ever before. Given recent events, real life collectivities are going to play a crucial role in maintaining this.” For the album’s artwork, Silverlining has collaborated with celebrated print-making  artist, Leonie Bradley, whose work explores similar themes.
 

The album opens with ‘Contracultura’, a 12-minute genre-bending journey of two halves. Making an unlikely flip from electro tenacity to warm deep house, the track’s distinctive bassline arrangement underpins a haunting Vocoder mantra to countercultures. Next up, ‘Aura’ shimmers with Detroit inspired keys and a feverish vocal sample. The crystalline and infectious house groove of ‘Fulcra’ is laced with dreamy synths for the early hours. The second disc launches with a hop, skip and jump on ‘Schema’, where an old school organ-bass drives the track towards flanged atmospheric keys that culminate in pure vibe. ‘Observa’ delves into hazy, dub laden abstraction, with its low swung breaks that wander beneath slick spoken word vocals from Miami’s Ntem (Soulclap). On ‘Tundra’, Silverlining calls on vocalist, Saba, for an old school, acid drenched and impassioned Chicago groove that meanders with sheer class in the spirit of bygone halcyon days. Closing out with panache is, ‘Recognitia’, a flashback to the feel-good golden age of 90s hip hop, featuring Ntem & Saba who both bring a unique flavour to the record with their duet.
 

This versatile collection of new music from Silverlining caters both for tasteful record collectors, and deeper DJs alike, with its extensive yet consistent spectrum of flavours. Shortly after this package of solo work, Silverlining will also be delivering a collaborations compilation of reissues from his illustrious past via Dutch imprint, Ninih, and includes sought after tracks from projects such as Two Right Wrongans, Impossible Beings, Appleheadz, and Southern Comforters.'
