"Sovereignty came from real stories about various people I’ve known, common experiences of how we try to handle life. It’s about being body identified, and attaching to physicality, and sometimes attempting to self medicate. Whether grasping at ideals of beauty or addicting to substances we remain in conflict with ourselves and tie ourselves in knots. The idea of the chorus is to try to be mindful of one’s own genuine beauty within the natural imperfections of being human and loving oneself as a unique being." - Lucinda

"Poetry refers loosely to William S Burroughs and the poets of the Beat Generation. It has a prologue called Ode to Joan. I love dark gritty poetry and the sapio-sexual and intellectually enlivening moments it can bring although it can also be indulgent, violent and maddening. I find the interface between art and everyday life in domestic settings a curious adventure." - Lucinda

"Dark Bark Garden is somewhat autobiographical. The dark back garden is a metaphor for the psychological push and pull between people bound in one another’s tormented energies. It has the deliberately menacing animal, elemental, visceral imagery. The text and companion spoken word piece were originally used in a visual art installation called “Queer Transgressions” at Brisbane Powerhouse." - Lucinda

The instant one meets eyes with another being, there is sometimes a feeling that goes straight to the heart of familiarity and connection. I like to try to move through the world as if we are all linked and all can easily love one another. "Don’t Look Too Long is a love song that speaks of flow and time and holding one another without grasping. Impermanence, change and constant movement are natural elements of life and love and music. Don't Look Too Long

"Flesh Of My Flesh came from an image of Phebe Manning as a grieving mother entangled in a powerful fig tree under the night sky, brought to life in a Vulcana Women’s Circus show for which I was Musical Director in the Toowong Cemetery.  There are many lost infants resting there so the song is designed as a loving lament and an offering up of those souls and those of all young ones who have passed. Like many of my songs there is a spiritual ecology that I think adds a feeling of hope and glory. I love that the song has dark eerie gothic feel but also has the strongly uplifting Gospel chords and refrain sung by a gospel choir." - Lucinda
