David's passion for dance music ranges from foundational genres like soul, funk, and disco to niche sub-genres of 90s house, UK garage, deep house, techno, and more. “Impermanence” is the first independently-released single by Portland, OR-based DJ and producer silversound.

Nineties house piano, dubby synth stabs, and a bubbling bassline ride a swishy 909 beat, accented by giddy snare rolls and a snarling Reese bass.

The title, inspired by the teachings of Thich Nhat Hanh and Pema Chödrön, honors the acceptance of impermanence as a fact of life, and the gratitude for life’s preciousness that arises from that acceptance.

Cosmic [silversonics 002] is a collaborative EP by silversound and d.lawrence. Inspired by the science of cosmology, the artists explore the meditative, echoing spaciousness of deep house, dub techno, and electro influences across three original tracks plus a remix. 

Cosmic microwave background radiation (CMBR) is faint thermal radiation spread throughout space. It is the oldest detectable light, revealing a snapshot of the universe about 380,000 years after the Big Bang. The EP’s cover includes historical NASA visualizations of the temperature of the CMBR spectrum as determined with the COBE satellite during its pioneering mission in the early 1990s. 

Join us for the release party at Secret Grove in Portland on November 30, 2024.

I’m obsessed with educating myself about the origins of dance music. I'm not the first to say this, but it’s so important to remember that all of house and techno is derived from disco, which evolved out of soul and RnB. All of these genres were pioneered by people who dared to express themselves in defiance of the immense oppression and persecution they faced in their daily lives.

And who dared express himself more flamboyantly than Sylvester? A soul singer at heart, he and Patrick Cowley revolutionized the sound of disco in San Francisco. Sylvester is inspirational to me because in art and in life, he fearlessly embraced his authentic self: black, femme, and queer!

When I found the acapella for “Mighty Real” at Streetlight Records in the Castro, I knew I wanted to do something special with it. By setting Sylvester’s timeless vocal to searing, full-throttle techno, I aspire to honor his legacy and also look to the future of dance music.

This remix is a tribute to the Queen of Disco (and, by extension, to all the originators of dance music). It reminds me that all dance music is disco. It reminds me of the past and present pioneers of civil rights. It reminds me to check my privileges—to examine myself in relation to the people who lived and created (dance music’s) history. Most importantly, it reminds me that all art must help make the world a better place: by spreading joy, by undermining hate, and by challenging expectations.

I hope this song helps to make the world a better place.

I took a week to let it all sink in. 

Nights like this are the reason I do what I do. It’s amazing how the simple act of playing music can create so much joy, and I am so grateful that I can play a role in bringing joy to our community and to the world. I felt the glow of this experience for days afterwards, and I access it again every time I listen to this recording. (As a DJ, there’s honestly nothing more gratifying than when I listen to the recording and I can hear the crowd’s ecstatic yelling and screaming coming through the needle.)

The Gay Nineties is not about being “cool.” It’s not even about always playing songs that are “good” (hat tip to Venus X for that wake-up call). What it’s about is having fun! It doesn’t matter whether every transition is perfect. (Playing vinyl for 5 hours means you have to let go of any expectation of perfection.) What matters is building and sustaining a vibe that creates that joyful, communal experience on the dance floor.

The first Gay Nineties was in August 2017 in a little izakaya and about a dozen people came out for it. Now I get to throw this party in my favorite club in Portland, and over 200 people came through the doors. 

I am truly grateful to everyone who showed up in the room that night at the Liquor Store. (Every time I DJ I am grateful for the immense privilege of playing music for people who enjoy dancing to it.) And I’m grateful to everyone who couldn’t make it but sent their love and support from afar. 

I especially want to thank Patrick Schneider https://soundcloud.com/woodboxcreative for his incredible support. Patrick knows exactly what I’m aiming for with the Gay Nineties. Not only does he offer invaluable assistance with setting things up and creating the right atmosphere, he also acts as my eyes and years in the crowd, feeding me insights about the vibe that I can’t always see from behind the DJ booth.
