Hospitality return with the follow-up to their glowing 2012 debut with a darker, richer collection of eclectic avant pop in Trouble. Taking unexpected yet satisfying turns, the new album sees the band offer up a moodier palette, with more instances of space and silence, looser arrangements and more open production.
 
The album draws on the expansive sound of 70s progressive rock and the minimalist urgency of post punk, citing specifically King Crimson’s "In The Wake of Poseidon", Arthur Russell and Wire as influences.

Hospitality - Last Words

I wanted to be your significant other, not your bank. I wanted your honesty, transparency and respect. Something I will always give. But love bomb me, lie to me, be deceptive, scam me and I will just become so transparent I disappear. My feelings were real. But I can't keep a promise to someone who isn't. Please watch out for these love scams, they are everywhere.

I made these songs in the month of October when love was high but so were the lies. I was being catfished, but I was partially in denial. I'm moving on slowly but surely.

Recently I was diagnosed with an autoimmune disease that attacks the kidneys. I'm doing fine, but part of me feels like time is of the essence. Things can change on a dime and all I'm thinking is what can I do to make best use of my time.

A few years ago, leads Edo Van Breemen and Zachary Gray got a gig playing members of a fictional band in the cult vampire thriller hit Afflicted. Given the constraints of the film’s indie budget, there wasn’t enough money to rent a sound-stage and hire actors for their concert scenes, so the producers worked some black magic and booked the band to play some legit gigs on their made-up European tour, shooting the scenes guerrilla-style with real crowds, the music improvised on the spot.

While playing one of these weirdly verité shows in a Parisian nightclub, Gray and Van Breemen realized that they might be on to something. So when they returned to their respective home bases in Brooklyn and Vancouver, they began to piece together their self-titled debut EP, a cross-continental correspondence that mixes the two’s seemingly disparate styles into a spooky, loopy, chorused-out post-cinematic groove.

Combining Van Breemen’s background as a film score composer with Gray’s pop guitar riffs, the result stays true to its unreal origins, making Unalaska the type of band you might discover after stumbling into some mythic after hours, somewhere in between here and nowhere.
