Ben Sims - Run It Red 002 (Feb 2015 / NTS Radio)

Armed with unwavering persistence, the idiosyncratic and self-critical Alex Niggemann has had a remarkable career so far, with the future still as bright as ever. Not many artists can attest to suddenly finding themselves sitting on Resident Advisor's 'Top 20 Charted Artists' after a friend submitted some of their work to labels without their approval. But this is exactly what happened to Alex, leading him to release on various labels from Audiofly’s Supernature imprint to Nick Curly‘s 8bit Records, and even establishing his own label, Soulfooled (followed by his second label, AEON, in 2013). Alex's heavy-duty Materium EP, released on Steve Bug's prolific Poker Flat, dominated the charts last year and sat in RA's Top 50 for weeks after it's initial release. Other notable releases of late include the excellent Earth Symphony EP on Sasha's Last Night on Earth, and also the hypnotic single 'Sorrow' on Watergate Recordings. 

For Alex's Balance Selections podcast you can look forward to some beautiful tracks from labels like Kompakt, Objektivity and Alex's own Soulfooled label en route to more darker cuts from acts like Rødhad and Barnt. It is very clear that what has been a sprawling journey for Alex to date is far from coming to an end.

Balance Selections 008: Alex Niggemann

Rrose—named after Marcel Duchamp's character, Rrose Selavey—is a dark and mysterious figure who makes dark and mysterious music. It comes mainly on his own Eaux label after early forays on the influential Sandwell District, and it combines mean and heavy overtones with more lithe and agile synths work. Most recently this American producer and live act served up an absorbing album of droning soundscapes on Seattle’s Further Records, whilst 2015’s EP output has seen him master supple techno forms drenched in reverb and soot black atmospheres.   This deep, thick and industrially influenced sound carries over in to his live set, and that is exactly what we are serving up for you on our next podcast. 

This one hour session is an absorbing one that sucks you deep down a blackened rabbit hole. It is one that recreates his show at this year's Dekmantel Festival and across the course of an hour invites your mind to get lost in elongated synth lines that slowly drift about like planets in orbit. Occasional percussive patterns and crunchy textures get loosely scattered across the airwaves and along the way the brooding clouds break to let in some blissful rays of optimism. There are few who have a sound as focussed and singular as this, as this podcast proves.

'Dawn' Pt. 3 (An Ambient Mix)

I still remember approaching the Robot Heart bus for the very first time during my first Burn. We departed from our camp all the way at 4 o'clock by bike, dodging sand dunes and cracks on the rugged Playa. From a distance we saw the illuminated heart, serving like a far far-away compass amidst the orgy of lazers and lights. And when we finally arrived, it was like being transported to another universe.  I was immediately engulfed by the experience.  So you can imagine my excitement and anticipation when I was invited to play the bus on Friday night of the Burn this year. The magic of the night is hard for me to put into words so I will let my music do the talking. Enjoy the journey and let it transport you back to those special moments on the playa.

To be honest, it's criminal that New Jersey native, Flamingosis, hasn't made a Boiler Room appearance yet. The now Brooklyn-based producer has been on our radar for a while, most notably via Sean Keating's regular office stereo plays — this year's future funkified 'Bright Moments' and the hazy brilliance of 'Pleasure Palette' from 2015 especially.

Both of those releases nonchalantly tread the tightrope between hip hop and disco/funk; often smooth and late summer afternoon-themed with the analogue punch of boom bap.

As he's noted in his description, this 50min blend comes after a similalry warm experience in more ways than one. Upfront 089 is blessed with incredible music that is custom-made for afternoon and late evenings spent horizontal. Gritty funk/rap knockers are shock absorbed by downtempo (sometimes saxophone-laced) jams from Flamingosis and his clearly talented group of friends.

This time we are staying close to home for our next Techno Minded Hero, he is part of a new generation of fresh dutch talents. He came on our radar through his album “II” on Mike Wall’s Wallmusic. (https://soundcloud.com/saamnl/ii-album).

In 2016, he released two tracks on Paul boex’s (of Abstract Division) Dynamic Reflection, and has other release’s under his belt on Monocline Records, Kompleks Recordings. His productions are supported and played by some of biggest artist’s, on some of the biggest festival’s out there.

Since 2013 he is performing as a liveact, and brought his impulsive melodic techno to places like Tresor and Club Basis.

In march of next year he will be performing at Soenda, one of the bigger indoor techno festival’s here in Holland. He will be sharing the line-up with names like Ben Klock, Luke Slater, Dax J, Vril, Clouds, Etapp Kyle, SNTS among others. So if you have the chance, go check him out there, you won’t be disappointed.

Biography
Saam (real name Sam Vermeer) is a Techno DJ / Producer / Live act from the Netherlands. He grew up living in a small town called Koedijk (near Alkmaar). At age seven he started playing the guitar and quickly developed further musical interest. So, at age 13, Saam started DJing. He bought two turntables and a mixer and started taking weekly DJ lessons. In the beginning Saam played vinyl only, but after three years he started to play cd’s as well. At this moment he started to get familiar with Techno tracks and started to develop his own style.
From this moment, Saam also began to produce his own tracks in Ableton Live. He produced his first Techno tracks in 2012, which led to multiple EP releases on labels like Wall Music (Mike Wall’s imprint). In 2015 Saam released his second album, also on the Berlin-based label Wall Music. In 2016 he signed 2 tracks at the Utrecht-based Dynamic Reflection.

Saam gets his inspiration from various analog synthesizers and drum computers, like the Roland TR-909 and the Roland SH-101. Nowadays he has a studio in Amsterdam, where he has his own collection of analog equipment. With this hardware, he creates his dark, whipping, tripping, Berlin style cuts.
2013 was the year when Saam started to perform live acts. In these live sets he exclusively uses his own tracks or remixes by himself. This act contains live drum computers, loads of MIDI controllers and more outboard equipment. This way Saam has a lot more to do on stage, as well as it allows him to have a better interaction with the crowd.
His production receive massive support from some great artists like Chris Liebing, DVS1, Joseph Capriati, Paco Osuna, Mike Wall, Dr. Motte and more. This support eventually led to some interesting gigs at events like Schönes Wochenende and clubs like Tresor (Berlin) and Paradiso
