Moonbeams are the gentle rays of light reflected from the surface of the Moon. Unlike the Sun, which produces its own light, the Moon shines by reflecting sunlight, scattering it across space and onto Earth. When this reflected light reaches us, especially during a clear night, it creates the soft, silvery glow we call a moonbeam. Because the Moon’s surface is covered in pale dust and rock that reflect light unevenly, moonbeams have a distinctive muted quality, often described as cool, calm, and diffuse compared to the warm brightness of direct sunlight.

Moonbeams have fascinated cultures throughout history, inspiring mythology, poetry, and folklore. Some traditions believed moonbeams possessed mystical properties, influencing dreams, emotions, and natural rhythms like tides or plant growth. In literature, they’re often depicted as symbols of romance, serenity, or mystery, illuminating quiet nighttime scenes or guiding characters through the dark. This cultural meaning adds emotional weight to the simple scientific reality of light reflecting from the Moon.

Scientifically, moonbeams demonstrate how light interacts with different surfaces and atmospheres. The brightness and color of moonbeams change depending on the Moon’s phase, its angle in the sky, and the composition of Earth’s atmosphere at the moment. For example, haze or humidity can soften moonlight further, causing it to “glow” or scatter in visible shafts. Whether viewed through a window or across an open landscape, moonbeams are a natural phenomenon that blends physics with beauty, making them enduringly captivating.

I noticed that many people have been searching for a longer edition of this theme, and so I took it upon myself to make this video.

Analyzation:
This track appears only in the Last Crusade, never in Raiders of the Lost Ark.  It appears in several locations.

As John Williams has borrowed heavily from Wagnerian music, this brass fanfare becomes an easily recognizable theme in the Last Crusade.  The brass choir shows the strict militarism of the Third Reich.

Other instances are in other locations in the soundtrack.  They were too vague to add in this movie.  They generally have a descending brass motif.

As to not have this video copyrighted, I have divided the track "Alarm!" into several spaces.  Originally this had the most complete theme of LC.  The most complete motif can be heard in "Brother of the Cruciform Sword at 0:24.
