I Remember DCM (Summer '94/95 Mix)

This mix is a piece of history. It’s one of the very few 1/2” audio tapes I recovered from my DJ sets at Blackmarket Nightclub, Sydney. 

I didn’t label the tape, but my best guess is 9th April 1995. I guessed the date because I know I popped in a 1/2” tape recorder on the eve of my flight down to HBA to see my mother. I know it was on a Sunday afternoon up until closing.

I’ve remastered the recording (obviously) in an effort to clean up the sound quality.

This mix was made on-the-fly (however that translates in this stupid digital word) and without pre-thought.

When you uproot a plant, it’s gonna get sick. Doesn’t matter how much love you give it. It’s going to miss the sun-cycle, the soil, the rain patterns etc. Everything its used to...

I’m uprooting from a place I know well. It doesn’t matter how much I hate the place I’m uprooting from - the process is always going to be painful. Yes, I’m going to a better place, but upheavals like this are not good for anyone. I’ve fought with people I really love; I’ve lashed out at loved ones, and I’ve been a complete shit. I’ve got some apologies to make; many are encoded in this mix.

And when all the chips are down, I've relocated to a geographically safe place. I regret that not. Sloshbacks, reversals, grand minimums... who the heck am I to say, "I told you so"? You decrypt and decide...

Tears Fall Down Mix

As I played it as DCM Nightclub resident in 1994/95. Beware of imitations. 

Only 5 DJ’s had the ticket at DCM on Saturdays: Simon Andrews (me(pictured with Brent)), Grant Truslove (the Godfather), Stevie B (the Turbo-mix), Brent Nichols (the Innovator) and Alex Taylor (the Smooth Mixer). Nobody else can claim that residency, regardless of what some wanna-be DJs want to tell you about DCM on Saturday Nights. Alan, Penny, Tim & Brook were very particular about the DJ list.

Special thanks to everyone who made this club special. 

For those who continually ask me, yes, I was also the main lighting technician at DCM. I wore two hats. Except when I was the DJ - Ben did the lights.

This mix is recorded from AAD tapes in  1995 (I think it was around Sleaze Ball Recovery) late that year. It’s an old tape nonetheless…

I Remember DCM (Amnesia 1993/94 Mix)

If you went to Blackmarket on Sundays after DCM from 1994-96, you heard my music from 10am until close. I was usually operating the lighting rig at DCM Saturday nights before coming over to Blackmarket to start my DJ set at 10:00am Sunday mornings. 

I always wore my white baseball cap on backwards whenever I DJ’d on Sundays.

This mix is reminiscent of those intimate days during Autumn / Winter of 1995. If you were there, you’d recognise that ubiquitous ‘tribal’ style I played in the late afternoon, before I picked up the pace again until 5:00pm closing.

And yes, sometimes I’d be back at DCM T-Dance to DJ from 6:00pm until close.

For those who knew me well, you’ll know how hard I worked to make your weekends a memorable experience.

DCM to Blackmarket: The Recovery (Smashed Yabby Mix)

I loved DJ-ing at DCM during the ‘heyday’ of house from 1994-95. Truly a golden era.

This mix captures the signature tracks from the summer of 1994 into the early winter of 1995. [February 1994 - June 1995], pretty much as I played them at both DCM and Blackmarket, Sydney every weekend.

Seamless and on-point. It captures EXACTLY how the major nightclubs sounded in mid 1995. If you were there, you were part of a movement. Many thanks to Allan, Tim & Brook, Penny, Margot, Eric and Ben.

DCM: Magic's Back! (Marko's Tenpin Bowling Mix) For the Lovers of House

I’ll never forget the first time I played at DCM. It was NYE on Dec 31, 1993. My heart was in my throat for the first hour or two, but the house was PACKED from start to finish (11pm - 8am). 

Undoubtedly, this was the kick-start to my career for many venues in Sydney’s inner-west. 

I guess I have to thank DJ James Fraser for offering me a little advice that morning as he took over at 8am. He told me to “stick to my long mixes”. And he was right. I still do that today.

I played a few recovery party sets at DCM after key dance parties throughout 1994-96.

Beware of imitations - I was a fully-fledged employee at DCM at the time and I can provide documentation to prove this. I’ve learned of people trying to claim they were DCM DJ’s. Trust me - they’re cheap imitators. For the record, there were only a few DJ’s on the playlist for recovery sets: Alex Taylor, Grant Truslove, Simon Andrews, Lexie Bradfield, Stevie B, James Fraser and Brent Nichols. That’s it. Check the roster!

DCM Recovery Party Set. Sundays 8am - 6pm 1994 - 1996

Thursday nights at the Albury. Low-key and trance-y. Good for the pub atmosphere.

After finishing my set at 1am, I’d hot-foot it across town to play the “Hellfire” nights at Blackmarket from 2am. Talk about having two completely different genres in my record crates! I carried some heavy weight on Thursday nights.

Needless to say, Thursday nights were a killer. But I thoroughly enjoyed them. 

The Albury Hotel is gone now. (So is Blackmarket incidentally). But memories are still on file: this is an original mix recorded from vinyl during 1994 (I didn’t record the exact date, but I think it might have been around March / April), and there are obvious imperfections in audio quality due to the poor acoustics in the DJ console.

Albury Hotel Tribute Mix. Thursday Nights 1993 - 1997

This mix was recorded impromptu on the wharf we built over our dam. As we burn off all the detritus from the empty dam at the end of the dry-season (that’s the track photo), we take a moment to recognise that the rains will come again like clockwork in the tropics. Within weeks, this empty dam will once again hold 1.2GL of fresh water and will provide a home for turtles, frogs, platypus (yep we have them), fish, caddisfly larvae, and a wide variety of bird life. We’ve taken great care to prevent cane-toad infestations and weed growth. Our dam is a native wildlife sanctuary.

Inspired following an irreconcilable split within the family. Much sadness, many tears, but with some set-teeth for the path forward…

This recording is saturated with B-minor keys throughout the mix. It’s intentional. This mix will bring joy and/or introspection depending on how you listen to it. That’s how B-minor works!

Resolution (New Decade Mix #4)

Matthew 19:24:

“And again I say unto you, It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle, than for a rich man to enter into the kingdom of God.”

I got the call at 8:15pm on Saturday night (26 Oct 2024). Scrambled out of the house within less than a heartbeat. Rocketed down the Gillies Highway from Atherton to Cairns, nearly killing myself in the process. I made it within minutes. Dad squeezed my hand, and then he was gone…

Dad died at 9:51pm AEST on 26-October-2024 in Cairns Private Hospital. He’s within the kingdom of God now. Everyone who knew him will surely miss him.

This mix was made in tribute to my late father; some of the tracks in this mix will (if you’re the least bit human) tug at your heartstrings. They certainly tug at mine…

Eye of the Needle (New Decade Mix #5)

It;s a hard mix to describe. Recorded in tribute to a very special friend of mine. Re-mastered from 1/2” audio tape from Blackmarket Nightclub.

I can’t remember the exact date of this mix. All I know is that it was Winter 1995. That puts it between May-July 1995. It was my ‘closing’ mix.

Early House days

This mix describes my clumsy rise from a hopeful amateur to a recognised pro in the early 1990’s DJ scene.

It was a hard slog to get myself known in the sydney clubs in 1991-93. The circuit was ‘sewn-up’ and saturated with really phenomenal DJ’s. I had my work cut out for me.

I knew I had a real ‘emo’ context behind the music I played, and I would visit venues, get into the ‘mosh-pit’ and see from within how the crowd responded to rhythm and tone. But more importantly, I experienced the real “feeling” of inclusivity and freedom of being a part of a movement.

So I would spend hours at home in my DJ studio, re-creating some of the sounds I experienced on the floor at many Sydney venues - DCM, Kinsellas, the Shift, Goodbar,  and many others.

I won a DJ competition at Annie’s bar in 1991 and was offered a set at the Albury Hotel. I was talent-scouted to play at Blackmarket and DCM in 1993. Clumsy at first, but once I found my feet, I soon let loose with my ‘emo’-house style. I made it a point to create a mood, and lead my clientele towards a FEELING by carefully selecting harmonic keys and rhythms. 

Everyone loved my music, yet very few people knew my name. I deliberately encouraged that. I wasn’t looking for fame; I just liked doing what I was doing and making people happy.

I could have taken my career further, but due to some rather unfortunate family circumstances, I let it all burn down shortly after 1996.

In 2017, I teamed up with a wealthy business partner to set up the “World Peace” series of exclusive dance parties. It was fun, and I learned a lot about wealth and extravagance, although I’m pretty glad I’m not part of that scenario any more.

These days I live on a small rural farm in a very remote part of the country. I sometimes wish I was a part of the glitz and excitement of the 1990’s / 2010’s, but now that I know what’s on the horizon, I’m okay with growing food and fixing things…

I have stories to tell my grandkids, and I’m ok with that.

Early House Days 1991 - 1994

Dug out from AAA tapes and remastered to AAD…

Australia Day 1994 set at the Pump Nightclub @ 800 Hunter Street Newcastle. Back then, the city was at it’s peak [culturally] before BHP shut down operations, effectively killing the city’s culture. I will never forget how the patrons were appreciative of “Sydney” music - the floor was packed from start to finish.

For the audiophiles - I could not in good conscious let this one out there without adjusting and remastering the mix. Recorded at the Pump nightclub in 1994. (Hunter Street Newcastle). 

The mix starts cold - I forgot to turn the tape on because I was completely off my gourd when I was playing this one - back in the 1990’s the substances were like that! [Approximately 90 minutes was missed from the beginning of my set].

I recorded this set on 1/2” (VHS-audio) tape, which means a lot of the sound quality was still intact and could easily be remastered - i just cleaned it up a little with some audio massaging and sound quality improvement software. The original live mix(including mistakes) remains intact. This recording captures some history as it was laid down, when I was a dissident Uni student :)

For those very few who listen closely - yes, I was using a DENON to loop some songs. I used an old (these days) Denon CD player to loop some tracks I had on CD. 

Unfortunately, many of those tracks you hear on this recording were later lost in a house fire in 1996; it took a great deal of money to re-source the original recordings - i play these on my “Šime’s Tropical Fruits Mix”. But that’s another story..

So enjoy this one - probably the closest you’ll get to the real DJ Simon Andrews.

Funky Summer House 2020 (World Peace Mix #5)

Volume 6 of the World Peace Mix series, this mix is a tribute to old-skool clubbing and the sexy House sound of early 1990’s at Sydney’s DCM nightclub (where I played resident for four years). It still follows the style of previous WPS mixes and is full of new releases, but if you were a clubber in the ’90’s you’ll recognise some remakes, cheeky samples and bootlegs thrown in. 2020: A Club Odyssey (World Peace Mix #6)

You're not allowed to have music in the cockpit when you're in the air. But if you could, this would be my soundtrack of choice.

Mix runs for 72mins, which is approximately the time it takes to fly a twin engine amphibious prop aircraft from ROK to CNS on a clear morning with no headwinds. Just saying ;)

On The Wing...(World Peace Mix #7)

It’s time to say goodbye to the World Peace Series. What better way to do it with a short mix recorded live on Oak Beach in Far North Queensland. On the full moon of a very warm tropical evening. A good way to close the series under the stars.

A special thank you to Thala Beach Resort! Our final days on the beach before returning to the inevitable Sydney lockdown were a sheer joy. Thanks also to my dear friend and lifelong partner, Mark for putting up with my late nights on the DJ decks up here. I love you!

I will, of course, keep mixing. But the World Peace Series must end here. Eight mixes is enough; and, as we all know, World Peace is now up to us coming together. Keeping together is the only way humanity will survive.

The Final Hour of World Peace (World Peace Mix #8)

Mix #1 in the “New Decade” Series. Chilled. Funky. Sexy. Just plain indulgent.

Before I left FNQ for that fateful trip to Sydney in August 2020 (effectively preventing me from returning home to Queensland for an indefinite period), I recorded this mix on the shores of Oak Beach, several days after we ran the intimate beach dance party [refer to WPS Mix #8] : “The Final Hour of World Peace”.

Indeed it was!

I had some days after that event to reflect, and imagine another angle of my approach as a DJ - bearing in mind I was micro-focusing to millionaire audiences during the WPS mixes. Of course, I didn’t advertise those parties to the mainstream (if I did that, it would have wrecked the exclusivity of those events), but you can still listen to the soundtracks - they are available from WPS 1 through to 8.

This mix was NOT recorded live at a dance party. It was just me and my decks on location at Oak Beach on a really balmy tropical afternoon, a few days after we packed up after WPS #8. It doesn’t diminish the ambience nor the impact. I recorded this mix with my heart wide open. The signature photo on the track is the late luncheon I gobbled down while mixing this recording - 4pm AEST to be exact. August 8, 2020. 

The location of this recording was only 100m up the beach from where WPS #8 was run a few days prior. Just a few days before, some 30 yachts were at anchor and three generators were barely enough to run WPS #8. (Logistical mayhem. A success, nonetheless.) Now, on this empty coastline, there were no flash crowds, no pop-up lighting rigs, no supercharged sound system; it was just me. With the ocean before me, and a good pair of headphones, I recorded this.

A big thank-you to Thala Beach Lodge for the impeccable beachside service. It was 28 degrees Celsius in the shade under those coconut palms. A gentle on-shore breeze wrapped in from the Great Barrier Reef and nearby islands. Just a few days after the glorious full moon in the tropics.

I kept this mix on ice for a long while - I wasn’t going to release it publicly because it wasn’t recorded at a live event. But on pressure from close friends, I release it now as the FIRST mix of a new decade.

Listen and share with your friends. A lot of love was put into this mix; a lot of my emotion went into this one, and I hope this brings you some joy!

Aussie Summer 2020-21 (New Decade Mix #1)

Simon began his public DJ career in 1990, appearing in an eclectic mix of  venues including the Imperial (Sydney), Rock Lily (Sydney), MP's (Gold Coast), Connections (Perth) and Pump (Newcastle), playing a funky house / progressive house style. In 1993 he began playing in more venues along the Sydney Strip, including DCM, The Albury, Taxi Club and Midnight Shift. Throughout the 1990s Simon's popular vocal house style, signatured by long transition mixes and infectious rhythms earned him popularity and a strong following in the competitive club environment. He became well-known in venues such as EP1, Blackmarket (Dayclub, Hellfire), DCM and Spike / Byblos. He also played at a number of dance parties in the mid-90s including "Venus 95" and Sleaze Ball in 1996 - 1998. He played on the Gold Coast (The Meeting Place)until it closed.

Simon is a veteran of the ‘old-skool’ House and House-Techno styles. If you’re on the dance floor at one of his gigs, prepare to be transported immediately into a sublime space. He has an uncanny ability to read his crowd, and often times it sounds like he is playing  just to YOU. It’s a refreshing style, and that makes him very unique in the DJ fraternity.

In 2018, Simon started playing at private dance parties at remote beaches along the Upper Eastern Australian coastline. These are the “World Peace” series - the ones before Covid hit our shores. His signature style still embeds him as a true master of House / Emo-house genre.
