Ой у лузі червона калина / In the meadow a red viburnum /

Rapids of the St-Lawrence river with the song of red-winged blackbirds, and warbling vireo (no doubt others). There is some wind in the recording. Filtering it out altered the sound of the water too much so I left it in. Next time I'll bring the ear muffs. 

Recorded at the Parc Des Rapides in Montreal on May 25th 2023 from 16:51-16:56 and 17:12-17:18.

Jessica Ekomane is a French-born and Berlin-based elec­tron­ic musi­cian and sound artist. Her quad­ra­phon­ic per­form­ances seek a cath­artic effect through the inter­play of psy­choacous­tics, the per­cep­tion of rhythmic struc­tures and the inter­change of noise and melody. Her music is groun­ded in ques­tions such as the rela­tion­ship between indi­vidu­al per­cep­tion and col­lect­ive dynam­ics or the invest­ig­a­tion of listen­ing expect­a­tions and their soci­et­al roots.

Jessica Ekomane - Talk - Polyrythms

Binaural recording of the Pacific Spirit Forest near the last Spanish Banks concession stand, on July 8, 2023. The are 8 separate recordings from different parts of the forest along various trails. I started at the bottom near the remediated salmon stream, then went up for a while, then West, up again, West and back down, then East, then down to the starting point.

The main soundtrack this time of year is the Swainson's Thrush which has that spiralling-up sound. But of course many other birds can be heard. At the beginning there are crows, including baby ones. I also heard flycatchers, nuthatches, chickadees, wrens, and sparrows. 

There are lots of cars and planes. It's amazing how many planes are always passing overhead. It used to really bother me when I was recording. Now I figure that's just the truth of it. It's still really nice to be in the forest no matter what. My hearing mind emphasizes the birds.

Pacific Spirit Forest - evening July 8  2023 (binaural)

An excerpt from today's (July 28, 2023) recording under the Ironworker's Memorial Second Narrows Crossing bridge in Vancouver, BC. 

Protect your ears first! But listen as loud as is comfortable for you. A lot of the energy you see in the wave form is low frequency, which uses a lot of amplitude for how loud it sounds. Binaural recordings sound best with headphones.

Recorded with a Røde NT-SF1 ambisonic mic into a Sound Devices MixPre 6 II recorder. Processed with the Røde's SoundField plugin to B-Format(AmbiX), then rendered to binaural with Institute of Electronic Music and Acoustics' Adaptive Binaural Decoder.

Second Narrows Crossing

For Rehearsal for a Forest, the Ensemble uses instruments hand-made from remnants and cast-offs of local trees and plants, combined with electroacoustic techniques, and improvisational approaches, to ask that we listen to trees for the sake of the forests.  Rehearsal for a Forest was developed as a precursor to on-site interventionist performances with living ancient trees in at risk forests. Rehearsal for a Forest can be performed in a variety of venues.

Rehearsal for a Forest

A binaural recording of a strawberry field on a hill near the ferry in Dawson City at about 7pm on July 20, 2023. This is where I was when I found out I had endometrial cancer, the day before this recording. There are sounds of the ferry coming and going across the Yukon River, swallows, dogs, ravens, flies, plane, wind. There is also a strange kind of phantom sound like small steps in the background. I don't know what that is. But as I've been listening to it getting prepared for this posting, it feels like a kind of heartbeat, maybe my own, maybe some other kind of rhythm nearby. At the end of this recording you'll hear my own voice speaking to the experience of hearing that I have cancer. I am posting this more than a month after that day so I am no longer that person; but it's a nice record of that state in time.

Dawson City Strawberry Fields - July 20, 2023 (binaural)

This is a demo for Embodied Dialogues, a collaboration-in-progress between Jenn Kirby and Iris Garrelfs, that merges body movement, wearable technology, and extended vocal improvisation. The performance features Kirby’s Sensor Dress, a wearable instrument that generates sound through the performer’s movement, and Garrelfs' unamplified voice. Sensor Dress is equipped with capacitive touch sensors and motion tracking, enabling real-time interaction between body, dress, and sound. As Garrelfs moves among the audience, her vocalizations activate the dress's sensors, triggering an array of pre-recorded sounds—ranging from electroacoustic and body-sourced sounds to environmental recordings—while her voice remains unprocessed. The performance creates an intimate and immersive dialogue between performer, audience, body, and space. The integration of wearables, voice, and motion highlights the tactile, organic aspects of sound-making and draws on unpredictability in live improvisation. The work challenges traditional notions of control and controllers in performance, inviting both performer and audience into an ephemeral, postdigital experience. By exploring the intersection of digital musical instruments, human-computer interaction, and embodied expression, Embodied Dialogues offers new insights into how wearables can expand the possibilities of improvised performance, emphasizing the agency of the performer and the fluidity of interaction between body, technology, space and sound.
