Fresh from his killer free download, Guru Recordings’ Klosman teams up with fellow label mate Askery for a bass-driven and energetic track drenched in an old school garage vibe.
“Thug Life” is varied and expansive, traversing genres, time periods and tempos all in one fell swoop. The entire record is awash with a vintage, timeless feel that seeps in through use of warm pads, lush bass and classic piano chords. There’s a distinct garage attitude at play too, with its surging sub-bass merging perfectly with modern house rhythms and driving drums. Distorted and compressed synth lines sketch over the top, delving into a modern urban soundscape that finds a fascinating balance with all the musical history that finds its place amongst the track. Its testament to the adept production skills of the pair that they manage to reference such a wide range of influences without ever losing any of the track’s coherence. Far-reaching but never self-indulgent, this feels like a love letter to music as a whole.
