Well *that* was something else. Truly.

This was the fourth successive year I'd played a sunrise on the Playa with my most excellent friends at the Nutz camp, and this year *everyone* upped the bar. The One Series (my vehicle for DJs to express themselves fully through uber-long sets) effectively sprang out of the love & passion for these ethereal mornings at Burning Man, so it seemed fitting that this would become One Playa Sunrise.

As with every year the sun was shining, everyone wore a vast, passionate smile with wonderful sights & sounds filling the air. We were joined by The Dusty Rhino & Painkiller, along with most of Distrikt. It was the perfect morning.

At the end, six intensely wonderful hours later, I dissolved into tears, not for the first time this week & the dancefloor submerged me.

This new mix showcases the sound I hear in my head when I think about a beautiful hybrid of breakbeat, techno and electro. It's also representative of the kind of Elite Force sets you'll hear from me in the live arena, as I return to the fray in 2023 after a four-year absence!

To craft a mix that had the exact feel I was looking for, I used 24 tracks in some shape or form, pulling many of them apart, rearranging them and adding liberal ly from my own extensive sample library. This set includes 11 Elite Force VIP edits, several acapellas / acidapellas and lashings of breakbeat-techno-electro love.

August 2023 Mixtape

This is my set from the Beats 4 Love Festival which took place at Dolní Vítkovice in Ostrava, Czech Republic, in the summer of 2023.

Since I returned to the fray in 2023, I've been using Ableton and a number of controllers to create my sets and am loving the flexibility it gives me to do deeper dives into edits, overdubs, mashups and mixes. It wasn't uncommon during this set to have four or five audio channels running simultaneously. I hope you enjoy the ride!

Beats For Love Festival 2023

A RE:CONSTRUCTED set is a *long* way removed from a standard DJ set. Here's how it works.

Simon takes hundreds of tracks from his huge library, painstakingly deconstructs them (using Ai if needed to separate elements from the original tracks), and then pieces everything back together to create a hugely emotive and immersive musical story.

He uses Ableton Live and multiple controllers to trigger up to 16 individual channels of audio at any one time during the performance, and also performs live keyboard overdubs. The end result is a hugely addictive, compulsive and compelling blend of music that's often new, often familiar but always utterly unique.

This is storytelling on a giant canvas, and in 2024 we will be adding visuals and further live instrumentation to these RE:CONSTRUCTED sets.

This set was first performed on January 1st 2024 in San Francisco at the Breakfast of Champions block party on the Space Cowboys main stage.

Breakbeat Breakfast Reconstructed - Jan 2024

This set was originally put together for RaveArt's 'Retro Festival' in Southern Spain which primarily focuses on OLD skool breakbeat sounds. On the night, my set was *badly* hampered by major monitoring issues in the booth, so I spent the following day re-creating the mix as I'd intended it to sound.

'Law of Life' (or 'The Law of Life' as it is sometimes known) was originally created in 2010 and was the only original track to be included on the multiple award-winning RVMPD album, released in the same year. It topped the Beatport charts and was nominated for a Breakspoll Award for Best Breaks track of 2010. It also appeared on the Pro-Evolution Soccer soundtrack (2011) and remains the only compilation I've appeared on alongside Ludwig Van Beethoven.

This track appears on the 2021 Elite Force compilation album, 'Music For Racers' and can be downloaded in WAV quality from Bandcamp, or streamed on all the major streaming platforms.

This collection of kinetic bangers is all about the Need for Speed. The compilation includes tracks that have appeared in games such as Motorstorm, Gran Turismo, FIFA, Wipeout Fusion, Wipeout Pure and Pro-Evo Soccer as well as a host of fast and furious Elite Force tracks from the catalogue.

Lurking within this tracklist are a number of never-heard-before pieces created for the gaming industry as well as a number of bespoke 'Racers Cuts' where tracks have been remastered and re-edited for maximum white knuckle-age.

Each mix will explore a different emotional arc, unfolding like a narrative across genres, tempos, and textures. Some will be recorded live in the studio, others captured live at CHPTR events. They’re connected by a shared intention: to take you on a journey.

Each set is crafted to unfold like a narrative – rich in texture, emotional depth, and movement. Not just a collection of tunes, but a journey with intention behind every transition, shift, and silence.

CHPTR 001 is, in many ways, a psychedelic selection – not in the hippy sense, but in how it gently alters perception over time. It starts slow, ambient, and introspective, gradually evolving through hypnotic grooves, off-kilter house, breakbeats, and late-night techno. It’s cinematic, immersive, and designed to be experienced as a whole.

Definitely not one I'll forget as we decided to drive there from Denver at the last minute to avoid airport issues during the protracted government shutdown ... a round trip of 2800 miles with some absolutely splendid conversation and scenery en route.

The VOID system in the basement of Monarch was a joy to play on, and the packed house bought the vibes once again as only San Francisco can!

CHPTR 004 - Boulder, Colorado (Nov 2025)

(PART ONE)

Recorded Live and unedited at Nutz Camp, Burning Man 2015 ... this most epic of One Series Sunrise sets wound up some time after 3pm. Given it's length (at around 9 hours), it has been split into two parts. For those of you looking for a single downloadable version, I may well put that on my Dropbox (download on request).

This Burn was my 7th, and the 6th playing Sunrise at Nutz. Far & away the biggest crowd to date gathered around dawn and joined me for 9 hours of pure magic, as only the playa can provide. This Burn was tough - the weather was aggressive, punishing and harsh, and we both commemorated huge losses (Jon Horvath, David Ringel) and learnt of the saddest of losses to our DISTRIKT family (Mike Reigle) as we were on the Playa.

This set held their spirits dear - a celebration of life, of love, or growth, of transformation, of commemoration.

The One Series [BMN016] - Simon Shackleton - Live @ Nutz Camp - Burning Man 2015 - Part1

This was the final One Series show in a 5-year run of events that began at Cellspace in San Francisco back in 2012. 

These sets gave me a much-needed chance to breathe and to branch out from the peaktime headline shows I'd been playing for many years. They allowed me time to spread my wings musically and explore different tempos and different flavours and tell a story from cover to cover. They inspired me and kept me going at a time when I was deeply disillusioned by electronic music's move into the bubblegum candy-pop of the supersized McRave. 

I believe that music has the power to affect people deeply and that it can be felt on a spiritual level, and during these sets I always felt that connection profoundly. I'm proud of what I achieved with them and that a beautiful legacy remains.

This particular set had to be reconstructed from 2/3rds of the way through as the recorder malfunctioned, but I didn't want to leave the Final One unarchived, so here it is in all of it's 6-hours of glory.

[RVMPD] Chemical Brothers, Elite Force - Block Rockin' Beats (2012)

I did this back in 2011 to close my DISTRIKT set at Burning Man with just as the sun dipped down over the desert mountains. Whilst it may not sound like it, a *lot* of studio work went into rebuilding this track - I wanted to keep it's beautiful flow and organic looseness, but bolster it with extra beef and bass. 3 days later, I got there with it.
