Brandy and Havana Blues is more than just a song — it’s a tribute, a farewell, and a final gift from a son to his father.

The lyrics were discovered just weeks after my dad passed, handwritten words he’d penned years ago, quietly tucked away. Though I’d known he’d written lyrics before, I never truly understood the depth of what he was expressing. It wasn’t until after he was gone that I felt the weight and beauty of his words.

Determined to honour him, I gathered a group of incredibly talented musicians to bring the song to life. With only a small window of time coinciding with my Uncle Richard (Dad’s brother and a seasoned musician) visiting from overseas we managed to pull together a studio session in what felt like the most meaningful kind of chaos.

What unfolded in that session was nothing short of magical. The music for Brandy and Havana Blues was created collaboratively, in real time, with every musician bringing their full heart and creative voice to the table. It wasn’t a case of one person leading, this was a truly collective effort. Each note, each rhythm, each arrangement choice came from shared instincts, raw emotion, and deep mutual respect. The song was essentially written in that one studio session a testament to the chemistry, talent, and soul of everyone involved. It simply couldn’t have happened without each and every one of them.

The result is a soulful, blues-inspired track that carries the emotional gravity of grief, love, legacy, and music passed down through generations. It’s infused with the spirit of the man who wrote the words, and the love of the people who made them sing.
