پل سلان این شعر را در حدود ۱۹۴۵ درباره‌ی «شوآه» (که امروزه به‌غلط هولوکاست نامیده می‌شود) و تجربه‌ی اردوگاه‌های مرگ نازی‌ها نوشت و نخستین بار نسخه‌ای رومانیایی از آن را با عنوان Tangoul Mortii (تانگوی مرگ) در نشریه‌‌ای ادبی (۱۹۴۷) و سپس نسخه‌ی آلمانی را در مجموعه‌ی شعر «خشخاش و خاطره» (۱۹۵۲) منتشر کرد. امّا بعدها به دلایلی از انتشار آن پشیمان شد و تا پایان زندگی‌اش هرگز اجازه‌ی چاپ دوباره‌ی این شعر را نداد. تانگوی مرگ اشاره به رویدادی دارد که گفته می‌شود در یکی از اردوگاه‌های نازی به نام Janowska رایج بود: مأموران نازی‌ها نوازندگان یهودی را مجبور می‌کردند در حال کندن قبرها، ضرب‌وشتم‌ها، و راهپیمایی‌ها موسیقی خاصی بنوازند که آن را «تانگوی مرگ» می‌نامیدند. فوگ مرگ را اغلب مثال نقض این حکم مشهور تئودور آدورنو می‌دانند که می‌گفت «بعد از آشویتس شعرنوشتن توحش است».

فوگ (Fuge) یک فرم موسیقی کونترپوان و چندصدایی است که در آن چند موتیف متفاوت در امتداد هم با یکدیگر تلفیق و ترکیب می‌شوند و ساختاری پیچیده را می‌سازند. بهترین نمونه‌های فوگ را در آثار یوهان سباستین باخ می‌توان یافت. سلان ساختار این شعر را به‌سان یک فوگ ـ همچون یک استعاره- طرح ریخته است. البته هیچ فرم متناظر ادبی دقیق و کاملی از فوگ موسیقایی وجود ندارد. اجرای پل سلان از فوگ مرگ در نوار ضبط‌شده از او بر ویژگی چندصدایی و فوگ‌مانند این شعر تأکیدی ویژه می‌گذارد که در فهم و ترجمه‌ی آن نیز بسیار راه‌گشا بوده است.

مارگارت (Margarete) یا مارگارته اسمی مشخصاً آلمانی است برای زنان و زن مطلوب رمانتیک‌های آلمانی را به ذهن تداعی می‌کند: زنی موطلایی، زیبا و آریایی‌تبار از نژاد ژرمان. مارگارت زنی است از جنس قهرمانان زن آثار گوته و هاینه.

«شولامیت» (שולמית) یا «زولامیت» (در تلفظ آلمانی) اسمی رایج و مشخصاً یهودی است برای زنان. این واژه‌ی عبری صورت مؤنث همان سلیمان است که با «شالوم» (به معنای صلح) و «سالومه» نیز مرتبط است. این نام در کتاب مقدس (عهد عتیق: «غزل غزل‌های سلیمان») نیز می‌آید  و زنی «سبزه ولی خوبرو» وصف می‌شود.
