Arad, real name Dara Smith, first joined the VOITAX catalogue in June 2020. Back then, the Irish artist served us up with »Radiance Haze« - a 6-track EP, spanning from heavy-hitting breaks to the ethereal ambience, with heavy features of Smith’s vocals. Known for his multidisciplinary vision on music, he has also previously made seminal moves with his work as one half of Lakker, alongside Eomac, dropping groundbreaking music on heavyweight labels such as R&S, Blueprint and Stroboscopic Artefacts.

For his second EP on VOITAX, Smith now returns with five beautifully crafted tracks that he titles »Augmented Fantasy«. While following a similar approach, he does not fail to expand his repertoire of celestial dream-like atmospheres, which he carefully surrounds with a whole variety of vocals, and accurately placed broken drum patterns. In addition to his own singing, Arad also presents two impressive collaboration tracks, in which one of them features the voice of Stine Omar, also widely known as one half the Berlin-based pop duo EASTER. Driving rhythmics and processed, grainy vocals turn this piece into guaranteed hit material. Another collaboration with the befriended vocalist and music producer Nina Hynes serves as a touching closing chapter for this brilliantly produced, eclectic 5-tracker. All pieces are perfectly glued together while keeping their very individual character and soundscapes. The listener is certainly left with an augmented fantasy, as well as a curiosity to hear more to come from the Irish talent.

Si Begg - Energie Electrique 

It was perhaps only a matter of time before Si Begg rocked up on Central Processing Unit. Now an esteemed veteran of British beat tracks, Begg’s name has become synonymous with quality club productions ever since he burst onto the scene three decades ago. In the years since, Begg has released scores of records on some of the most prestigious labels in the business - Tresor, NovaMute, his own Mosquito. As such, his debut on the Sheffield imprint whose name has become a sign of quality since it launched in 2012 seems like a wholly logical progression for one of electro’s most consistently excellent producers. 

Begg’s casual mastery of his sound is shown off by the fact that he doesn’t over-egg the pudding of the Energie Electrique EP. Rather than doing sonic cartwheels to get people’s attention, Energie Electrique is characterised by the way Begg adds or subtracts elements to sturdy grooves. It’s an approach which makes for a collection of tunes that manage to bring the boogie from the off while they also hide all sorts of aural Easter eggs amidst the mix. 

On opening cut ‘Energy’, a droning start full of crisp drum programming soon develops into a head spinning electro groove reminiscent of Kraftwerk’s Computer World. An acid-laced bassline waxes and wanes, modulating in intensity across several minutes as Begg sprinkles in percussion, synth blurts and vocoder vocals. It’s a slyly insistent rump-shaker, and the - ahem - energy that the track provides carries through into following number ‘Buckfunk Beatz’. This joint begins with a gnarly, chattering synth sound before the sizzle and snap of a broken-beat kick-hat loop locks into place. While still very Kraftwerkian, ‘Buckfunk Beatz’ also has the playful grizzle of contemporary practitioners like Cardopusher and Begg’s fellow CPU operator Silicon Scally. 

Things switch up at the start of Energie Electrique’s second side. Rather than rolling out a high-octane groove, Begg delivers a low-slung mid-tempo roller called ‘MS10 Machine Funk’. The programming on the kick drum here could almost pass for a dirty south hip-hop production if Begg didn’t lace it with such a strangely compelling use of the oscillator - sometimes squealing, sometimes squawking, sometimes wobbling, always thrilling. The mix flecked with chordal stabs, ‘MS10 Machine Funk’ is a masterclass in combining danceable beats with the quest for thrilling sounds that is so often the mark of a truly musical mind. 

To round things out, Begg brings us back to the beginning. ‘Electro P1 B’ is a delightfully dystopian bit of Drexciyanism. Piston-hiss drum programming, nervy atonal synth nodules, some cavernous reverb deployment - this is a body-mover if ever you heard one, and one executed with all the style, aplomb and panache you’d expect of Begg. Si Begg takes his Central Processing Unit bow with the Energie Electrique EP, a quartet of club tracks to rival anything in his vast and vaunted discography.

The dancing had begun in the depths of the cave. The music whirled and echoed around the chamber as the fire began to blaze. This was nothing like he had ever imagined or foreseen. The place was packed to the rafters and the warwhoops of a nation would be heard all throughout the night. This was animalistic, primal by nature and as the time went on the chaos descended into a carpathian rave of monstrous proportions. Away they went, on and on. 

Youngg P steps up to release a jacking primal house come techno EP for the infamous up and coming Private Persons record label. This one is packed with drive and precision.

Tenebrous frenchman Jon Beige (formerly known as Beige) strikes back with his 3rd release, and once again creates his own genres that we’re going to define here as ghettowave or leftfield-core. Melting high-tech soundscapes, hypnotic synths and broken drums, his heavily synthetic universe spreads into 5 new tracks. Here’s a few words about them, including comments from the producer himself.

Distorsion Naturelle de l’Auto Radio is a straight-in-the-face kind of entrance. This arid and distorted urban jam puts you straight in the heart of Jon Beige’s dystopian Gotham paradise « I often imagine it as a laser tag game that would turn wrong ».  

On Palo Santo, Jon Beige is going dancehall. Using the genre’s symptomatic drum pattern, he navigates between club-friendly and meditative moods in a tensed yet balanced journey. « That’s the track I think is the most finished of the EP, but all the tracks match together in a not-fully-calculated way ».Hydrocution is a funk ballad, like a mysterious forest walk surrounded by disturbing but harmless creatures that are taking you to a bright glade, where you will finally stumble into the master of the place. « I often struggle to produce something simple with just a few elements – this track is the first time I succeeded. »

Isolat is a smooth and psychedelic sci-fi trip, unexpected and always moving forward « I imagined a little robot lost in a city suburb, wondering what he was doing there. Mood is kinda Spike Jonze’s ‘’Da Funk’’ but with a robot ».

The EP closes in a very noir scene, heavy rain, melancholia and cold blooded crimes : Déjeuner Sous l’Herbe won’t let you rest in peace. « This track, my oldest on this EP, was made in 2014. I’m still really into the solo in the end ».  

The artwork is designed and imagined by Belgrade-based artist and producer Stevie Whisper, aka the hands behind Yes and Mystic Stylez.
The record will be released as a ziplock package that includes a USB stick with the WAV files and exclusive club remixes + a limited edition poster + some cool stickers.

Releasing Jon Beige since his earliest work, Global Warming Records is run by french producer and talent seeker Malcolm, who imagines and shapes each project hand in hand with his artists. Friendly Surveillance will be the label’s 12th release.
