Berlin-based record label Odd Pleasures is finally born. Curated by acclaimed Chilean duo Random Atlas (SXDNS155/FREEDL024), the new South American/European imprint will be devoted to exploring the darker side of disco and focus on bringing a fresh blend of Electronic and Rock, Post Punk, New Wave, and everything in between.

For its debut release, ODD Pleasures has prepared a Worldwide Various Artists Compilation including tracks by well-known producers from Argentina, Chile, Mexico, and Turkey: Alvee, Persona RS, Marzian (SXDNS128), Alex Aguayo, Ducati Flux, Javier Martinez (SXDNS104), Fat&Bald, Ludviq, Aural Trace, and the label honchos themselves make up the dream team. 

Every artist presents a delicate piece of their musical exploration that gives life to an obscure, mysterious, and futuristic sonic universe. Powerful beats, underpinned by catchy and dark bass lines, New Wave synthetic textures, and atmospheres with hints of Post Punk and Krautrock elements. ODD Pleasures’s first compilation proposes a storytelling journey that crosses the line between the dancefloor and casual listening, a soundtrack to anyone who seeks an immersive driving force.

The track we were solicited to premiere/review was cooked with love in Santiago, Chile, by talented producer Roman Sebastian aka Persona RS, also a member of MKRNI, Roman & Castro, and Follakzoid. His “Space Pod”, definitely one of the highlights of the release, is a groovy and bouncing peak time cut with a powerful bassline and a stunning synth layer, a powerful contribution to a mighty compilation. Australian raised, New York based producer Kate Stein makes her debut on Playground Records with ‘Mystic Saddle Ranch’ a powerful Ep full of hypnotic rhythms and beautiful landscapes, composed by 2 original mixes accompanied by high caliber remixes from Autarkic and Balam.
‘Mystic Saddle Ranch’ begins like a train barreling from far away with staccato arpeggios and modulations; like horns warning that it is in a hurry and the energy will not stop. Sensual and seductive at the same time, the track builds with an elegant current of sound. This takes us back to the beginning of electronic sounds, reminiscent of I Feel Love. The glam of Studio 54 crossover with some acid slow electro makes for an irresistible dance ripped dress.
The second track is called ‘Hi-Lo Motel’ and it gets more serious. A bouncing synth marks out a crossover bass with modulations seeping back and forth in alien tone. A smooth and rarefied flight, ecstatic, stealthy and nostalgic.
Autarkic remixes ‘Mystic Saddle Ranch’ by twisting it with a lot of funk machine. A hoarse, scratchy bass grooves recklessly as a dirty, dragged snare beats his side. Cowbells rattle for flavor as acid modulations elusively intersect. Pads of mystery take us to a break
that is quickly attacked again by the bass to unleash a brazen and shrewd dance.
Balam gives his own perspective about ‘Mystic Saddle Ranch’ closing the Ep and doing what he does best, mixing synthetic tribalism of acid modulations and frenetic percussion. His bass, his personal mark, pushes incessantly and cadency. He takes us on a sinuous and enchanting journey while chords scatter us through an open space towards infinity.

Franz Scala offers the first remix of 'Homme Fatal'. He is a long-time friend of Vamparela, with whom the used to organise parties together in Thessaloniki before moving to Berlin. Franz is now the label head of Slow Motion and New Era and is known for running the infamous Italorama parties in Panorama Bar. His diverse sets weave smoothly between Italian Dance, Psychedelic Disco and Proto House, quickly turning the dance floor into a vignette-tainted retro nostalgia rave. Aside from producing on his own imprint, he has releases on World Unknown, Bordello A Parigi, Bahnsteig 23, Tusk Wax, Mechatronica and Discodromo's Cocktail d'Amore Music and frequently inspires dancers in clubs and events all over Europe. While preserving the catchy, stuttering bassline and 80s break drums, Franz's remix softens the track for a more melodic rework with lush synths and gentle, reverb-heavy vocals.

The Brvtalist is pleased to premiere a new track from Comme Un Coeur aka Dmitry Distant. One of his most luscious releases to date, he presents a romantic take on the classic ‘Eyes Without A Face’ ballad written by Billy Idol and Steve Stevens back in 1983. Languorous vocals by Valeria Simonova, Dmitry’s longtime collaborator, are set off against a backdrop of lush, sparkling synth parts, to create a hazy, dreamy sonic atmosphere. The title track is juxtaposed to the expertly made remix by Franz Scala, a well-known DJ and owner of Slow Motion Records label – this hypnotic throbbing banger with Italo and EBM influences is surely meant to rock the dancefloor.
