Royo is a fierce champion of the Texas underground.
With production credits that stretch back to '04 and a DJ schedule that spans nearly two decades, the Houston-based artist has been a foundational force in defining the sound of Texas electronic music. Under his previous pseudonym Sines, he founded Formant Recordings and Freshmore, which were homes for dubstep and club-leaning experiments. And in the mid-'10s, he rose to further prominence as a former member of production duo Santa Muerte and the head of MAJÍA—a label that would become notorious for exporting the chaotic experimentation (and often Latin-influenced sounds) of the south's electronic scene.
Nearly a decade later, however, Royo has shifted his attention to southern club, a sound that hijacks the thump of Northeastern club styles and coats it in thick, syrupy melancholy. Under a new name and at the helm of his new label Club South, Royo's latest music has shifted to incorporate rapidly-shifting breaks that whip along at breakneck speeds, drenched in soulful samples and dramatic synths that recall the psychedelic qualities of Houston rap and chopped & screwed music. Without losing sight of the reggaetón and UK dance music that helped him find his sound, he continues to add to his sonic palette, pushing the definition of southern dance music into new forms.
With the first few Club South releases under his belt, alongside the label's growing mix series featuring a host of local co-conspirators, the shape-shifting artist's profile is only growing, and he's intent on bringing the Texas underground up with him.
