The cold, sharp light of the full moon wrapped each of them in its bitter grasp, tendrils of the deepest anger and regret encircling them as the shadows from the dense branches of the grim forest of their surroundings. Their old friend lay prone at their feet, the gun that ended that precious spark of consciousness still smoking in Lenny’s hands, his weathered face cast down, cold eyes staring at the carnage of his making. Blood flowed darkly from the head wound, a growing treacle puddle reflecting the moon above in its metallic embrace, each of their faces around it mirrored darkly in that slowly expanding pool of their brother’s end. The curse that had escaped his lips as he realized the betrayal was seared into their ears, the final glance spiked through with heartbreak entwined in deepest hate burned into their retinas. But for all their regret, their patriarch had spoken, made himself clear… the family is violence, but it is not the twisted pleasures that he had chased, and the family line, when crossed – is the very end of consciousness.

L 33 cracks open 2018 with his inimitably heavy style of ultra funky and future-focused neuro on home imprint, Eatbrain. Following up his much-loved, cornerstone ‘KARATE LP’ on the label, the MAFIA EP delivers 5 tracks of the kind of hard-hitting, purely dancefloor drum & bass that L 33 has come to be known for, with LIGHTS OUT also featuring the smooth but sinister vocals of MC COPPA delivering the vibes. The name ‘Odyssey’ is apt from an LP which explores the full musical world which The Clamps has built around his art. And alongside Kosen Production, he’s about to unleash a collection of records that is a full spectrum look of what he’s achieved over his career, one which has spanned the neurofunk genre and helped provide some of its most unforgiving, yet refined sounds. Stretching across fifteen tracks, mainly falling within the techstep and neurofunk categories, there’s a host of featuring artists which help to platform the network he’s built through his music, from Nuklear MC, Impak, Merikan, Mizo to Nickbee. Due to drop in September, Kosen Productions - one of the leading independent imprints pushing up through its competition - is set to release its first teaser. It comes in the form of ‘Mankind / Soul of the Abyss’. ‘Mankind’ is a sonic rendition of humanity’s dark side, setting the scene of the world going mad, whilst ‘Soul of the Abyss’ focuses more on the depression, juxtaposing the track’s more melancholy parts with its more aggressive elements.

‘Mankind’ creates a landscape which is snapping and unforgiving, one which slowly drags you in like quicksand. The Clamps isn’t afraid to search for new and exciting avenues for his music, which is shown throughout ‘Mankind’. Its foreboding intro sets the scene and bit by bit you’re gradually pulled into the chaos. ‘Soul of the Abyss’ is more deeply menacing; a brooding concoction of throbbing drum peddles, crackling LFOs and peaked stabs of bass. Whilst still pushing the same underground feel as its forerunner, The Clamps doesn’t mince his intentions, cutting forward with the precision and snapping jaws which are still part of the track’s more understated composition. Yet it still causes as much of an impact and that’s why this package provides an intriguing opener of what The Clamps is about to unleash. He has a talent at his disposal which has been proven time and time again, meaning that the anticipation around the album will only begin to rise. Its world is chaotic as The Clamps has ever been.

Long had rumors abounded of places where the veil between worlds was thin, where one could walk into other planes as though simply stepping into their own home. Such points of crossing were said to be rare, and the few that occurred naturally were secrets well kept by those who knew of their location for they held the potential for immense power in their shimmering surfaces. Each such point was said to be guarded by a Keeper, unknowable beings from neither side of the threshold who kept watch over all that passed through, their existence proven only by the remains of those deemed unworthy that lay before their lairs.

For one who possessed apt knowledge of such places, passage through such portals was indeed possible with proper preparation. On rare occasions, when the energies of the earth rested in perfect balance, such portals would appear in the most isolated portions of the world. Those who could foresee this would wait patiently in such places for the day of crossing, preparing themselves for this most unlikely of opportunities. In focused ritual they would etch symbols into the gate’s position, warding them from the Keeper’s wrath. As the portal appeared they would take the momentous single step into the beyond, striding confidently into a world unknown as they passed through THE DOOR.

EATBRAIN veteran L 33 returns to the label with his next solo EP, THE DOOR, as he continues to champion his energetic tech focused sound on the like minded label. With a legacy built on EATBRAIN across releases such as 2016’s Karate LP & a slew of further EPs on the label, THE DOOR carries on in this tradition with four tracks emblazoned with powerful sonic presence by the longtime EATBRAIN collaborator.
