Niv Ast is an artist who very much operates 'out of the box'. His work on Correspondant, Optimo, Disco Halal, Watergate Records and Get Physical - as well as his work via his own label Band Apart - is bold, line-blurring club gear making him a perfect candidate for an Exploited Club release.

Niv Ast is inspired by the psychedelic waves of acid, the attitude of the punk-rock and the light headed groove of disco. His music is regularly played by DJ Tennis, Jennifer Cardini, Polo & Pan among others. He has performed alongside Tale Of Us, Seth Troxler, Amelie Lens, Blond:ish and many more.

'Tainted In The Sun' kicks things off with a Manchester chorus beaming out over stroppy power chords and a throbbing kick. Progress marches on, gathering colour as it blooms into a synth-driven haze adorned with brass flashes, spiralling sequences and a straight-talking snare. The vibe is heady, infectious and a touch subversive - a slice of euphoric recall for anyone who barely remembers the 90s.

'Don’t Belong' follows up with an Indie-Italo hybrid. Tough, muscular drums anchor the groove while a flexible synth line gently pulls things astray. Clever sequencing has the track swelling in layers as a brooding intensity builds up towards a bridge of darting strobes. The refrain drives back in, hooking the listener back in and capping off a boisterous pastiche; one that strums a certain nostalgic chord whilst also presenting something fresh and novel.'

Mexico meets Augsburg! Feines Tier veterans @theusmago and @dominik-marz join forces for the „Timewarp“ EP. And to everybody whose stream of consciousness associates this title to terms like „Feierei“ and „Gude Laune“: Well, you’re not wrong. The message is brought to you through on-point less-is-more drum programming, distorted toms, crystalline synths, chirping 303s and spliced-up vocals. So basically everything you’d ever need for a proper feierei. Mr Smallville Paris aka Jacques Bon and his pal Drux (nomen est omen?) serve their exquisite tastebuds to cook up a bittersweet remix of the tune, which makes for a deep(!) dish with its trippy percussion layers and nebulous pads. Maybe don’t drive a car after consuming this one. The gude vibes continue with „Fredonien“ which is served in two variations: Firstly the „Vox Mix“ which is going all in on honoring its title and is as sweet as candy, with the synth chords adding that dip of melancholy we’re craving from all the best deep house tunes. The regular version is a more streamlined affair, but don’t be fooled: The amount it’s lacking in heart wrenching vocals is more than made up by melodramatic Mellotron-y synths dropping by from time to time to say hello and raise the stakes. All we’ve got left to say after all these timewarps, drux and vox is: More of this collab, please!

Amine K is Morocco's leading house music ambassador. He has been a pioneer in his local scene for many years and is now as well known on the international circuit for his organic sounds on labels like Sol Selectas, Monaberry and Do Not Sit On The Furniture. Here he links with Robert Owens who has been voicing house music since the 80s and continues to add his signature sounds to only the finest records.

The wonderful 'Tinker Bell' is one of those: it is an electrifying house cut with sleek synth designs that twist and turn above the groove. The smoky, rousing vocal tones of Owens add real soul and are sure to captivate hearts and minds.

Remixing it are WAHM whose alias means 'illusion' in Arabic and is in reference to music's effects on brain functions. The live electronic duo is composed of two multi-instrumentalists with a passion for blending different musical styles on this label as well as the likes of Diynamic. They flip 'Tinker Bell' into something more stripped back and raw with crisp tech drums and snappy snares brought to life by the thought-provoking Owens vocal.

Erich Fromm‘s “Escape from Freedom” was published 83 years ago. His assumption was that modern man, having freed himself from the shackles of the old days and living freely, longs to return to the totalitarian, destructive and conformist world. In 2024, the pluralistic and individualized way of life of the so-called West seems self-evident. Boundless freedom is suggested - but we continue to flee. Utopias are crumbling and conservatism is experiencing a renaissance. At the same time, the freedom to decide “to be able to stay” in contrast to “having to leave” currently seems to represent a high value. 

This EP by the two producers from Germany and Ukraine, was created in this field of tension. „Freedom From Escape“ adapts the former title of Erich Fromm‘s central work, which is given a prominent role on this record. Music and techno are freedom and escape at the same time: transcendence and escapism. In interaction and contradiction at the same time.

The cover picture was taken on 25 July 1909, when Louis Blériot became the first person to cross the English Channel in an aeroplane with the Blériot XI, which he had designed himself. The reversal of the title and the idea for the cover artwork came about during a conversation with the artist Jennifer Mattes in Vienna. 

With „Choices“ & „Escapism,“ the two protagonists create a world of minimalist dub techno, which also has melodic, flat side strands in its narratives. The more than 60-year-old fragments from TV interviews with Erich Fromm on the subject of freedom, decisions, constructivism and destruction are presented so densely and rustlingly that you don‘t feel compelled to follow the lecture. Instead, the spoken word corresponds with the minimalist framework of the two pieces. The old audio recordings are embedded as part of the composition. Some of it may be understood and arouse the listener‘s curiosity, but again and again you get lost in the repetitive swamp of sound, so that you may understand more of the text each time you listen to it without it imposing itself on you.

The two remixes of the first track take a different approach. 
"Save Your Atoll" specifically frames and limits the spoken word in its interpretation and embarks on a hypnotic journey that is less worldly and more futuristic.
"Anna Kost" goes one step further by literally suffocating the old man's spoken word, as if the destructive drum patterns were trying to shut him up.

"Freedom From Escape" will be released on 18 October 2024 in a physical edition of 200 records and is available digitally on all common portals.
