SGST (Episode 72) - Mixed by Felix da Funk

Odyssey Inc. is a UK-based music collective created in 2019 by producers Mark Jones & Paul Gullefer, and was inspired by a mutual love of all things Disco & Funky House.

The chart success of their first release ‘Keep On Dancin’ (released on Glasgow Underground) was an auspicious beginning, eventually landing them their first Number 1 on Traxsource in Dec 2019 with ‘Whatcha Gonna Do’ - originally released on Blockhead Recordings but later licensed to Toolroom to be featured on Toolroom’s Poolside 2020 album.  Following on from that success, their remix of Hallelujah (David Penn & Kevin McKay) blew up and confirmed Odyssey Inc as the ones to watch!  That same year, Odyssey Inc hooked up with longtime friend and dance music legend Wayne O’Connell (Soul Avengerz) and together they founded the independent record label, Trois Garçon Records.   The label’s first-ever release hit #2 in the Traxsource House Chart - starting a trend that has continued with all of their subsequent releases reaching Top Ten chart positions.  

At the end of 2020 Odyssey Inc. was voted 15th House Artist of the Year out of 200, and 2021 is already shaping up to be another big year.  In February this year Odyssey Inc hit the coveted No 1 spot yet again with their release of Soul Avengerz ‘Respect’ (Wayne SoulAvengerz & Odyssey Inc. Remix) on Trois Garçon Records.  Most recently the label is enjoying yet more chart success with ‘Love I Lost feat. Peyton’ hitting Top Ten on Traxsource in the first week of its release.  

All signs seem to indicate that this creative odyssey is most definitely going to be a long, and very exciting one for Odyssey Inc.

Alex has headlined some of the biggest parties around the globe, and for many years was a resident DJ for We Love Space Sundays at the recently-closed legendary super club Space in Ibiza.  His much-loved podcasts which feature so many diverse sounds are a testament to what it means to be a tried and true DJ who can cross styles and music genres as effortlessly as if crossing a sidewalk.  The title 'superstar DJ' gets bounced around way too often these days, but Alex Taylor is one of those rare veterans of music who has earned the title fair and square through years of tireless and dedicated service to dance floors worldwide. Regarded by many in the dance music industry as the driving force behind the Australian House Music Scene, Johnny’s list of accomplishments are many. He has worked alongside many of the industry heavyweights and they consider him his equal. On a recent Pacha Release Johnny was described as one of his ‘Aussie Crew’ by Eric Morillo. So much so that his track ‘Poindexta’ was the Number One release on the latest Subliminal Summer Sessions Album.

Johnny is the quintessential Australian DJ. He is a product of Australia’s burgeoning House Scene of the early 90’s and is responsible for bringing quality dance music to Sydney. The simple fact is, that without Johnny Gleeson in Australia, House Music would never have taken hold.

He has always maintained his artistic integrity whilst still producing huge slabs of highly accessible dance music. He is praised for it by artists such as Axwell, Morillo and David Guetta and is considered the ultimate crowd-pleaser. He was one of the first Australian DJ Residents at Pacha Ibiza and is highly regarded for delivering sets of epic quality. He has played alongside DJ’s such as Roger Sanchez, Carl Cox, Tenaglia, Basement Jaxx, Martin Solveig, Bob Sinclar, Pete Tong, The Swedish House Mafia and Eric Morillo. In 2010, he was nominated for Artist of the Year by the OZ Music Awards. Eric Kupper began playing in bands in his formative years, and got his real start in the mid-1980s working as a keyboardist, guitarist, and songwriter for such producer/remixers as David Morales, Frankie Knuckles, Arthur Baker, Mark Kamins, Justin Strauss, Peter Rauhofer, and Richie Jones. Since 1986 he has played on, remixed, and/or produced over 2,000 records for artists spanning all contemporary musical genres. His work in the mid-to-late 1980s/early 1990s, especially his work with Def Mix Productions, is considered to be part of the foundation for house music as it exists today. He released an album under his own name, From the Deep, in 1995.

As a remixer he has worked with Garbage, Usher, Alicia Keys, Whitney Houston, Marianne Faithfull, Goldfrapp, Cher,Janet Jackson, Shakira, Enrique Iglesias, Sheryl Crow, Lenny Kravitz, Kylie Minogue, Moloko, New Order, Yoko Ono, Dido, Brandy, Depeche Mode, Curtis Mayfield, The Brand New Heavies, Robert Palmer, Afrika Bambaata & Soulsonic Force, Kate Bush, Anastacia, Donna Summer, Miley Cyrus, RuPaul and PEYTON among numerous others.

Kupper has also worked as a producer and/or mixer for many projects outside of the realm of dance music. Some artists he has worked with in this area include John Wesley Harding, Julee Cruise, Roisin Murphy, Coolbone, Drill, PM Dawn, The Butterflies of Love, Saint Etienne, Gaz Brookfield, McQueen, Love Bites, Ofra Haza, Jaymes Bullet, Laura Pausini, and Gloria Estefan.

He has released three albums under the name "Eric Kupper presents K-Scope." The most recent was called Electrikiss, released in January 2009 after a ten-year hiatus. Kupper also started the Hysteria Records label.[7]

As a DJ, Kupper has played and continues to perform all around the world. He was one of the first five Hed Kandi DJs before leaving the label in 2006.

Having two remixes signed to HedKandi as well as a World Series Hedkandi Album under his belt, Greg is definitely a heavyweight name in House Music.  Combining 18 years of experience and determination to please every type of crowd, it's no wonder Greg Myers is highly requested to rock the world’s most glamorous dance floors.  From former World Resident DJ for Hedkandi and resident at the legendary Space Ibiza, Greg has gone on to headline events for the Winter Olympics in Canada, F1 parties in Singapore, as well as Creamfields and KISS RADIO to name but a few.  Greg's diversity sets him apart - whether it's playing soulful classics or big room house  - every set takes you on a journey and confirms this DJ's immense talent and deep love for the music!

It all started in the summer of 2004 – the soon-to-be worldwide smash ‘Love On My Mind’ – and Russell Small and James Wiltshire quickly found that their Studio partnership was a match made in heaven. As ‘Love On My Mind’ gradually conquered the clubbing world – it took over a year from first release to hit the charts – they built themselves a reputation as the best ( and grammy Nominated) remixers in the business with a host of acclaimed club mixes for Beyonce , Kelly Rowland , Shakira, Faith Evans, Kylie, Jamiroquai and others.
Over the next few years it would be no exaggeration to say Freemasons were one of the hottest dance acts in the world. As well as their own hits such as ‘Rain Down Love’ and ‘Uninvited’ that were coming thick and fast, their remixes of tracks from Beyonce’s ‘B-Day’ album including ‘Déjà Vu’, ‘Beautiful Liar’, ‘Ring The Alarm’ and ‘Greenlight’ became legendary with their versions used as the lead radio edits across Europe, along with other mixes such as Kelly Rowland’s ‘Work’, Kylie’s ‘The One’ and Whitney Houston’s ‘Million Dollar Bill’.
Freemasons released two Shakedown mix albums and their own album ‘Unmixed’ and hit the top ten again with their sixth hit in a row with ‘Heartbreak’ (Make Me A Dancer) featuring Sophie Ellis-Bextor. 
The success of their productions led to bookings all over the world, headlining Mardi Gras twice and playing everywhere from Rio to Seoul, culminating in an epic ‘Summer of Pride’ in 2010 in which they headlined at every major Pride festival in the UK and North America.
By 2011 the endless touring and long hours in the studio were taking their toll and Freemasons decided to take some time out.
“We were burned out, it was becoming so difficult to travel all over the place at weekends and then work all week in the studio,” says James. “We also wanted to develop our sound. Dance music was changing, technology was changing and we didn’t want to get left behind. We rebuilt our studio from scratch with new methods of working and a new sound.”
Refreshed and reinvigorated the Freemasons began releasing their new material last year with big club tracks ‘Bring It Back’, ‘Dirty Organ’ and ‘Tears’ as well as experimenting with a deeper project under the Pegasus Branding. Their remix career picked up where they left off with chart topping mixes for John Newman, Depeche Mode, London Grammar and Hurts. 
“We’ve written and recorded so much new material we’ve enough for a couple of albums at least,” says Russell. “This is why we decided that our Shakedown 3 should be a triple CD – a part mix album, part artist album, the best of both worlds.”
A lot has changed in the ten years since Freemasons began their career but one thing has not - the music and the public's response to it. Or as James put it recently "We've always been about that moment a huge vocal note crosses a bar-line, hits the chord change just right and the hairs come up on your arms- We're with Nile Rogers - it's about how a record makes you feel that’s important"

Wayne made his dj’ing debut at London’s infamous Red Heart party in April 1996, performing alongside Grace Jones to a dancefloor of over 3,000. However, it was his 9 year residence at London’s world’s famous Heaven Nightclub that made Wayne G a household name. Mark Picchiotti is an American DJ, producer, remixer and songwriter based out of Chicago, Illinois. As a remixer and producer, Picchiotti has amassed 24 number one singles on the Billboard Dance Club Songs chart, and he has remixed such artists as Beyoncé, Katy Perry, Mariah Carey, Rihanna, Daft Punk, The Killers, AC/DC, Florence and The Machine, Amy Grant, Foster The People, Michael Jackson, Madonna, Sia, Sybil, Enriqué Iglesias, and Mary J. Blige. In 2002, he produced and co-wrote the Kylie Minogue single “Give It To Me” for her 8x-Platinum album Fever. Jay B McCauley has been a staple diet in the House Music scene for over 30 years. Playing to crowds the world over he has always focused on the more soulful side of the street. Starting when dance music first exploded in the UK during the summer of love, he has performed under his real name and his alternate The King of Sunday Morning all over Europe and the Australian continent.

In Sydney he has performed at Home the Venue and all the major clubs that were once a feature on the Sydney landscape. He has also been a House Music writer and collaborator during that entire period working with artists such as Jesse Saunders, Terry Hunter, Danny Rampling and Ron Carroll.
He pulls a crowd wherever he plays but it is on the terrace where he is most comfortable. With that vibe of sun-drenched beaches, he manages to weave a sound that speaks of endless summers and balmy tropical nights. As a result, he was recently invited to play at Café Del Mar and supported the legendary Honey Dijon.

His most recent project is also a music focused love story. Being associated with major artists gives Jay access to the upper echelons of the dance community and means that he is able to pursue his other passion which is writing. He is editor-in-chief at Switched On Music! which is set to become one of the best platforms for focusing on House Music and the places it is played.
He is a published author having released a fictional tale about the dance scene called The King of Sunday Morning, regarded by Danny Rampling as, ‘A great book. Essential reading.’

Francesca Faggella, English-speaking Italian Francesca grew up with music in her blood, recorded her first single aged 17 under the pseudonym of Sharon S, “Wonderful”. This is the third SGST volume mixed by DJ Perl, but it's the first time we've had a chance to really speak with her and give the radio listeners a chance to get to know the diva behind the decks.  In this episode, Peyton gets DJ Perl (aka Brooke Perlman) to open up about where her passion for house music comes from, before moving on to the deeper discussion about what life has been like this year for so many university students who have had to try and adjust to the impersonal necessity of completing their curriculum courses online via virtual classrooms.  At a time when millions of students have been forced to modify their methods of learning, as well as their behaviour, there has been a lot of reporting in the press about the recent surges in infection rates, placing some of  the blame on college and university campuses where many students have ignored suggestions to adhere to any recommended precautionary measures.   In this episode DJ Perl talks openly about her own experience of testing positive and getting sick with the virus as a result of spending time in the company of her friends at school who were not taking precautions.  She also identifies what she feels to be the single most important thing she has taken away from her four year university experience, and speaks passionately about her work with the All Ways Up Foundation, a non-profit organisation based in LA that helps first-generation and low-income youth get to AND through college by providing scholarships, emotional and mentoring support, as well as annual leadership summits. Paul Gardner & Wayne O‘Connell are no newcomers to the industry, being an integral part of the London house scene for over 22 years now. But it is only recently that the guys have earned the long overdue, and much deserved, worldwide recognition they have been striving for.  In today’s climate most artists carve out a production profile before proving themselves as DJ’s. It is this that often leads to most artists’ productions being more dance floor orientated the more experienced they become, as they gain that all important first hand knowledge of what it takes to rock a packed dance floor. As DJ’s first and foremost, Paul and Wayne already had intimate knowledge of what worked in the main rooms up and down the country, so it was a simple case of applying this knowledge to their production work, and it is this that has led to their imidiate rise to fame.

House music has come to attract all manner of less than complimentary connotations as the scene has grown up, but at its core the term still implies crowd pleasing main room music.  They soon became known for their love and devotion to all things house and 12 years on they're still here, passionate as ever and still love struck with “house music”

One of Sydney’s newest DJ’s to the scene, DJ Nate (Nathan Morris) got his first start via the 2017 Halloween Whores fresh blood competition. Nate then went on to win the bedroom DJ comp at the Royal Oak in Double Bay.  From these competitions, Nate has gone on to play at some of the legendary Dan Murphy’s parties such as Go Out, FAB and I Remember House (IRH) in Melbourne.

2018 was really the breakout year for Nate, playing at major events with Daywash and 4the.Love in Sydney and RockCity in Melbourne. Capping off a great year with an invitation to play the main-stage at Halloween Whores.  In 2019 Nate continued to be booked in both Sydney and Melbourne and in August, played several gigs at Burning Man, his set at Bubbles & Bass being a highlight. He returned to the main stage of Halloween Whores to a sold out crowd and played his first gig at ARQ.  In February, 2020 Nate opened for Dua Lipa at Sydney's iconic Mardi Gras event.
