si8hmosis is the Abenaki word for "Little Hawk", the name given to me at birth by my mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. I am the Hawk, my brother is the m8lsem, the Wolf, my cousin the Tolba, the turtle. 

We are of the Abenaki of Odanak. 

Today our reservations are Odanak and W8linak, they are in Canada and have a population between the two of about 700. Throughout New England and into Canada we have about 3,000 band members.

To those who feel the pain of being indigenous and the trauma that's come from colonization, please know you are not alone in this pain. There are many more out there who feel this and wish to find healing for our ancestors and to be the step forward that heals the pain our grandparents inherited and passed down to us. This EP is my step towards that. These are my personal issues and emotions released through music, with honor given to our heritage. In hopes to continue to build my platform so that I can share my stories, my families stories, the Abenaki stories, and to raise awareness about who we are and to shout that we are still here!

si8hmosis is the Abenaki word for "Little Hawk", the name given to me at birth by my mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. I am the Hawk, my brother is the m8lsem, the Wolf, my cousin the Tolba, the turtle. 

We are of the Abenaki of Odanak. My great grandmother left the reservation to raise her family after being given an ultimatum of keep her faith, lose her children, or become christian, and keep her children. Out of fear, she became christian and eventually left Odanak. Because of that fear and for what the missions and boarding schools did, she vowed to not speak our language. Not until she was nearing the end of her life when she shared much more. Luckily her mother was determined to keep the Abenaki culture alive and taught my grandmother, mother, and aunt everything she knew. Our story today, is one of loss and great sadness. The pain continues but on behalf of my family and people I strive to keep our story alive and to breath healing into it. For what my great grandmother was afraid to speak, I can sing loudly for all the world to hear. 

I know I am not alone in this pain. There are many more out there who feel this and wish to find healing for our ancestors and to be that step forward. This EP is my step towards that. In hopes to continue to build my platform so that I can share my stories, my families stories, the Abenaki stories, and to raise awareness about who we are and to shout that we are still here!

Today, our people live amongst the Northeastern United States, our reservations are in Canada, they are Odanak and Wolinak. We are currently facing a major battle and need to spread awareness as far as we can. There are tribes that claim Abenaki heritage in Vermont and New Hampshire, but the people in these tribes have no ancestral or genetic ties to the Abenaki peoples, to my people. We have been fighting this battle for 25 years as these "tribes" have tried to gain federal recognition in the US. And since we do not have recognition in the US because our reservations are in Canada, we have no backing from the US government. These tribes in Vermont and New Hampshire are living on our ancestral land and claiming it as their own. To add validity to our claim Professor Darryl Leroux has done genealogy for these tribes and 98% of them do not have Abenaki ancestry. They are French Canadians cosplaying as our people, stealing our stories, changing them, and passing them off as their own. They are doing incredible amounts of damage to our history, culture, and heritage with every word they speak. 

I grew up with the story that there were white people living in Vermont who's grandparents traded with our peoples and appreciated our way of life. So they implemented some of our ways into their lifes. Eventually, their grandchildren and children would grow up questioning these ways wondering where they came from, and these people would lie and say they had Native American ancestors, and since we were on the verge of extinction, who could say anything? 

Today, there are zero Canadian First Nations and zero US First Nations that accept these tribes as Abenaki. And you shouldn't either. They are not us. They have stolen our stories and profited from it while our people have been forced to silence. We learned our stories from grandparents by whispers because of fear, and now these white people come shouting loudly from the forests sharing our stories, and sharing them wrong, hurting them, hurting us. 
I ask that you support the cause and take time to spread awareness.  Listening to my EP, reading this story, google "Abenaki Odanak" or "Abenaki Frauds" and checking out some of the info would be so much more help than you could ever imagine.
