This episode of PTR finds us experiencing in full Part 1 of William Basinki’s monumental and historical Disintegration Loops. These 4 albums are comprised of tape loop recordings played for extended time, with noise and cracks increasing as the tape deteriorated. Basinski discovered the effect while attempting to transfer his earlier recordings to digital format.

The completion of the recording coincided with the 9/11 attacks, which Basinski witnessed from his rooftop in Brooklyn; the cover art features his own video still of the New York City skyline in the aftermath of the World Trade Center’s collapse. He dedicated the music to the victims of the attacks.

The Coctails were an eclectic "garage jazz band" of self-taught musicians who experimented with various instruments and played in a manner they described as the Chinese Fire Drill method, in which they rotated instruments during live sets.

The  foursome were sometimes pigeon-holed as a "lounge music band". However, they were curious musical adventurers and eager for a challenge. In their final years they also explored avant-garde jazz and indie rock.

The band's catalogue is pretty immense and, as a result I found myself selecting songs that showcased the band's seemingly depthless creativity and unpredictable versatility.

The Advisory Circle is an alias of electronic musician Jon Brooks. Like other acts on the Ghost Box label, Brooks' work as the Advisory Circle channels old British popular music, specifically library music, the BBC Radiophonic Workshop, and 1970s folk. 

Inside his perfectly interlaced synth lines, an air of Cold War nostalgia prevails, the overriding sense that utopian thought has become a past construct. Brooks works quietly, releasing music under varying guises, never looking for attention. It fits with his fondness for barely heralded musicians—synth pioneers (such as Suzanne Ciani and Brian Bennett) who never got their dues, whose work now fuels a small part of the reissues industry. This is music that’s longing to be lost just as much as it is to be found, made with a knowledge of how the process of falling out of view can end up coloring works with a unique texture.

Brooks has just released a new album as The Advisory Circle called New Ways of Seeing and it fits perfectly into his canon of “soundtracks for films from an alternate reality”.

This week on PTR is an epic 2 hour musical adventure entitled The Airtight Garage of Jerry Cornelius by Moebius. It was curated by the one & only David Faust! When asked to elaborate on the gist of this surreally gargantuan playlist, David explained :

"It's a soundtrack to a story set in two locations, a bedroom crammed with books and pop culture ephemera and a pocket dimension that exists inside of an asteroid. The Airtight Garage of Jerry Cornelius. Jerry Cornelius is a character created by Michael Moorcock as a kind of swinging sixties amoral gentleman assassin. The character was an early attempt on the part of Moorcock at open-source creation with anyone being able to make Jerry Cornelius stories. Years later, French artist Jean Giraud, who had gotten some notice for his comics set in the American west wanted to try something different so he began drawing a surreal science fiction fantasy story that would later involve the character Jerry Cornelius as a kind of vaguely malevolent background force. Miscommunication between Moorcock and Moebius had the latter change Jerry Cornelius to Lewis Carnelian and he continued the story. Moebius had no ideas about the structure or the ending and just let things happen as they happen.

The music in this compilation moves between pastoral and urban, but both tinged with the surreal because the story does take place in a pocket dimension that exists inside of an asteroid floating in space. Early on there’s Hendrix who was a major touchstone artist for Moebius. He was obsessed with his music and also drew numerous pictures of him. The decades are the 60s to the 90s, with most of the music landing somewhere in the 1980s. Japanese synth music appears frequently because it seems to also flow between the pastoral and urban. The music compliments moments of action and introspection and also occasionally suggests intrusions from outside, as if someone is watching everything unfold while also listening to something."
