This idea has been in my head for months... Hippychick is a song connected to my move to the UK many years ago. But more importantly I wanted to finally create & finish a track, perfectly imperfect - and get it out there. I studied Logic and Pro Tools at SSR years ago, so Ableton has been tricky to figure out (everything is in different places) but my BF patiently showed me how to nudge my vocal parts and left me to it till they sounded right. "Cybernetic Melancholia - 電脳メランコリア" is the fifth album by OKURUTO, an experimental Japanese electronic artist known for blending J-pop, chiptune, vaporwave, anime aesthetics, lo-fi, and retrowave into immersive soundscapes.

This concept album tells the tragic yet beautiful story of Shizuka, a sentient android who awakens to self-awareness, only to realize that she is an anomaly—a ghost in the machine. Hunted by the system, she must erase her most cherished memories, escape relentless cybernetic enforcers, and ultimately face oblivion. Each track unfolds like an anime episode, taking listeners on a journey through bittersweet nostalgia, high-energy digital chaos, and haunting electronic dreamscapes.

Through glitchy synth textures, distorted vocal fragments, melancholic melodies, and cinematic 80s-inspired arpeggios, "Cybernetic Melancholia" captures the fleeting beauty of a digital soul on the verge of deletion. In the age of over-information and over-exposure what control do we have over our public persona? It's all about the personality, all about our profile, incessant, endless posts to every medium we can lay our hands on.

After 25 years of DJing around the world,  the catchily title |-...-.|  seems like they've had enough of all that and switched to the exact opposite and put together a project with no real name, no real public persona or much else besides. But it's been getting noticed by the right people - Joe Muggs featured them twice in Bandcamp Daily this year, and their latest album "Deliveroo Studio Séances" is the piece that really caught our ear.

"This is all about music being judged on its merit rather than ego or identity, transcending the audiences potential preconceptions and focusing on a sonic and visual journey. "

The sound pulls from various places - you can hear bits of Aphex Twin, Burial, Daft Punk, and Weatherall in there. It's genre-fluid stuff that doesn't fit neatly into boxes, which is probably why the likes of Trevor Jackson and Prosumer have been supportive.

The whole anonymous angle means the music has to speak for itself, which it seems to be doing. So it feels kind of counterintuitive to ask them any questions for this rather tasty mix they've put together of original material, intermingled with other beauties. But we'll do it anyway, hey.

Faithless - Insomnia (Made In TLV Remix)

It's impossible to talk about the sound of DjRUM without using the word cinematic. Whatever he does, it has a feeling of grand importance, widescreen elegance and moving emotion that elevates it way above a dance floor soundtrack. Throughout the course of his career, the UK artist has drawn on downtempo, blurred the lines between drum & bass and dubstep and always imbued his music with spoken words snippets, piano and chamber instruments. His Portrait With Firewood album was a real high-water mark in 2018, and last year his latest outing on R&S once again managed to draw on every aspect of electronic music and come up with something all his own. 

His mix for us this week is a perfect ethereal rave that finds plenty of beauty in the sparse rhythms he draws on from the worlds of garage, techno and drum & bass. There is a delicacy and elegance throughout, even when the beats hit hard and fast as they do at the overdriven and manic mid point. The amen breaks come thick and fast after that, but eventually melt away to propulsive ambient soundscapes that suspend you in time and space. Blissful.
