Few things hit the spot better than a Frits Wentink release on WOLF Music. Like a crisp pint of vitamin G on a summer’s day, Frits pulls the perfect pour for the 70th release on the label. Three trademark wonky, left of centre cuts, designed to intrigue, yet destined to make you dance. It’s fair to say that there aren’t many producers who can claim to have as distinctive a style as Frits. A captivating wobbliness brews with a deft swing and tangible bounce in the Wentink barrels, instantly distinguishable from the very first sip.

‘Remember that Feeling’, the first in a fresh run of Frits x WOLF EPs, has got all those flavours and more in the mix. ‘Royale’ takes the full A side, a Fritsy bumper if we ever saw one. Skippy, seductive garage house with a psychedelic tinge. On the B, ‘Intentions’ showcases that MPC crunched sample wizardry, as smokey jazz keys swirl around RnB vocal snippets. Closing out proceedings ‘Move Steady’ is a hit of off-kilter, late night basement business, rolling low-end, UK funky flavoured percussion and all.

Pariah (Arthur Cayzer) is a British music producer and DJ based in Amsterdam. Since his first releases in 2010, he has made a name for himself off the back of his eclectic take on dance and electronic music, both through his productions and his approach to DJing. He is the co-founder of the Voam record label alongside Blawan (Jamie Roberts), and the two have collaborated extensively for more than a decade, performing and releasing music together as Karenn and Persher.

As part of our countdown to the 1000th edition of the RA Podcast, a milestone in the 18-year history of Resident Advisor's weekly mix series, we're switching up the usual format.

This week, following heady excursions through Lagos, Kampala, Detroit and Chicago, our focus shifts to Latin America—arguably the story in underground electronic music since the pandemic.

After years of being all but overlooked internationally, the explosion of distinctive club sounds emerging from Peru, Brazil, Colombia and beyond has finally begun to get its due.

Among the movement's great success stories are two artists who exemplify its refreshingly undogmatic energy: Verraco and Bitter Babe, and the former handles the A-side of RA.997. 

Is there a more compelling electronic artist around right now? Both in the studio and behind the decks, the Medellín-based DJ and producer currently sits in that coveted creative sweet spot, where every fresh musical morsel feels like a moment. To bask in any of his singular tracks on VOAM, Timedance and now XL Recordings, is to be bowled over by their rhythmic brilliance, madcap hooks and whirlpool basslines. ("Basic Maneuvers," anyone?)

His mix is tough to pin down—a blend of dubby techno, tribal atmospheres, slanted bass and sharp edits. Or, as he puts it in the accompanying interview: “an intersection between dub-infused techno but with some flow, reduced atmospheric tribal, edgy bass cuts, mental emo-tek.”

There’s plenty of unreleased TraTraTrax material here, alongside tracks from artists like Virginia, A Made Up Sound and a euphoric flip of Ploy’s “Ramos.” Slippery, emotional and surgically precise, it’s Verraco doing what he does best.

Jovonn exploded onto the house scene in 1991 with his second release, “Turn and Runaway” on Warner Bros  which reached number 10 on the Billboard chart and catapulted Jovonn onto the global House scene.

A pioneer of the NYC, New Jersey, 90’s house sound, he’s produced many classics with releases such as as “Back In the Dark”, “Garage Shelter”, “I Can’t Make Up My Mind”, “I Wanna Go To A Club” that all contain Jovonn’s distinctive vocal delivery and trade mark production, as the man says himself ‘gritty sounds, hard kicks, jazzy chords and a phat bassline’. Other releases in Jovonn’s impressive discography include ‘Something About this Love’ ( WestEnd Records), “The Spirit” album (Track Mode), and the “Blaque House” album on Code Red.  More recently he’s delivered releases on prestigious labels such as Clone, Dogmatik, Objektivity, Deeply Rooted House and Apollonia, showcasing his talents to a new audience of house music lovers.

Jovonn launched his new label  Body N ’ Deep earlier this year via Clone Distribution, dedicated to releasing the hottest deepest and rawest underground house tracks from Jovonn and his crew of producers and vocalists.

‘Timeless’ is Jovonn’s  first since ‘Blaque House’ in 2009.  The album focusses on the deeper side of house and Jovonn’s trademark New Jersey house sound, with contributions by Patrick Mangan (violin) on ‘Hesperia Soul’ and Cassioware on ‘Turnin Me Out’.
