This one's been a long time in the making.  It started in late 2017 after playing a good portion of Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild.  There were a few tracks (Tarrey Town in particular) that I just HAD to sample.  The experience of that game moved me to mine the entire soundtrack (and sound effects) for inspiration. Before I knew it I had and albums worth of beats I really loved.  I sat on em for a while, knew they needed refined and was thinking I would do my usual remix thing with em and put other artists vocals over top.  But as I began refining the beats, something about them overwhelmed me with the desire to write and perform again...and so a very long process began.

From around 2019 - 2023 I wrote, recorded, re-wrote, re-recorded, edited, scrapped, produced, mixed, mastered, and tried to make every one of the songs mean something to me and sound like something I was proud of.  The vibe all started to come together when I decided to lift some Robin Williams quotes to introduce and close out the album.  Robin and I were born on the same day, and he was a noted Zelda fan after all.  When I stumbled across his lines from "August Rush" in my search, I knew it was a perfect fit.  Then I decided it needed some vinyl scratch style vocal stabs to really round out the some of the songs.   I taught myself how to emulate that sound with my synth, scoured the ENTIRE original Zelda 90's cartoon for some great clips, and I certainly found them.

I could've called it good, and released this album over a year ago, but it wasn't good enough for me.  I started studying mixing and mastering theory and practice so I could create something that sounded more professional and aurally cohesive.  The final product is much better for the patience and effort I gave to it.

So now comes the hardest part.  Setting it free into the universe. Letting go of it and moving on to the next.  I wish I could hold onto it forever, but it won't grow that way, and neither will I.  Can't wait to see what I come up with next.

BEHEST OF THE WILD

The kid Icarus politely-asked (challenged) me to cull some dopeness from the Fez Soundtrack because well…Fez is great game with a great soundtrack. So I accepted his challenge and gave myself one of my own. Finish whatever it will be in 1 week.  No perfectionist bullshit. So here it is, a week later, rushed but I love it…which...kind of the point.

Ten years later, that line stings like whiskey in an open wound.  Not because we were truly prophetic, but because even back then, we were aware of societal atrocity in the way so many seem to be now, and still nothing's changed.  It wasn't merely our perception though; it was more than having read it on underground news sites and having heard it from the mouths of those we looked up to.  We FELT it.  In our bones.  In our very soul.  It haunted us.  It inspired us. It moved us to write what we wrote and create what we loved.

About a year ago, when I set out to re-master and produce these songs into the vision I had always had for them, I did not consider how timely (and timeless) their content might be.  Even though it took a decade for this project to finally see a "proper" release,  I think the world may just need it now, more than we thought it did back then.

Super Mario R.ap P.henomena G.athering -- Legend of the 7 Bars

Welp.  It took 5 more years, but I got another one of these silly projects done.  Ended up sampling nearly every sound and song off Kirby's Dreamland on the Gameboy.  Some of the mash ups turned out better than I had envisioned and I managed to churn out a much more focused album than my previous effort with SMRPG.  So overall I'm proud, albeit with a begrudgingly perfectionist attitude.  

My brother Mattjew described what I do with these as a "Musical Smoothie".  That's apt as fuck.  I couldn't agree more.  This will likely be the last one I blend up for a while though.  They are exhausting to construct and it's high time I focus on creating some stuff with original vocal and lyrical content, so that's what I'm gon do.    In the meantime, please enjoy the sounds and stylings of Kirby's Dream Band....
