This is a short mix dedicated to Maestro Anibal Velásquez, incredible musician and the world’s most hardcore, trail blazing Acordeon players and singers. If you can dance it, he can play it, lightning speed Guarachas are his trademark, but he has a deep back catalogue of Pasebols, Cumbias & Charangas. 

When I was living in Colombia I was fortunate enough to learn accordion first hand from Anibal in his home in Barranquilla, over a year or so he schooled me on his approach, an open book on his the gun slinging technique, no button spared, bellows always drawn. His principal has sometimes been overlooked by a country consistently moving on to the next, but Anibal has been a staple of the Afro-Carribean diaspora as much as Arsenio Rodriguez or Beny More. He is one of the few artists 
who can brag that their career began on radio and 78 recordings and now is still putting out music in the digital age. Part of his arsenal has been the fire and ferocity of his backing band, together with his brother Joseito they are a true musical force, a world of frog noises and close harmonies. 

I gave up expecting to collect every Anibal record years ago, 
partly because there are just so many, I think you’d need a whole Anibal room for it in your house, but maybe thats what we all need. Anibal turns 80 Years today, and with a murderous dry wit and fearless musicality shows no sign of stopping any time soon.

About Tuğçe Kurtiş: 

Originally from Istanbul, Turkey, Tuğçe grew up with a love for music, especially music performance. Since age 6, she has performed as a singer in countless occasions in Turkey, the US, Brazil, Costa Rica and Paraguay. She has collaborated as a singer, songwriter, and co-producer with Paraguayan musician & producer Santi on three albums: Cíclico (2014), Songs for Another Day (2015), and El Regreso del Gallito (2016). She has also released three singles: Donde Va (2016), Sevda Çiçeği (2016) and Backflash (2015). 

These days, Tuğçe is working on two albums for the upcoming year and exploring her new found passion for making mixtapes. As the founder of the Kybele project, she is also developing opportunities for greater collaboration and broader inclusion of artists from around the world.
