Mix Series 2021 Ep. 09: Suse

London based LUCiD, is a DJ, record collector, promoter, producer and shop assistant in the legendary Sounds of the Universe. She made her way into music by throwing raves and parties, before being spotted by London’s heavyweights Percolate who gave her a slot at Secret Garden Party. Since then she has become a regular on the festival circuit, frequenting the likes of Glastonbury, ADE, Gottwood, Love International, Festival no 6 and Alfresco. Lucid has DJ’d around the globe stretching from Amsterdam, Berlin, Croatia to Uganda and across India and South East Asia having done a tour there in early 2019. She is well known for championing Womxn in the industry, originally being part of Rhythm Sister and then going on to found WXMB 2 after creating the Female DJ Database. Lucid currently has a successful monthly radio show on Balamii Radio, and on 1BTN, a Brighton based FM station. She has been a guest on NTS radio, Rinse FM, Reprezent, RBL Berlin, and all girl radio station Foundation FM. For this weeks episode we have Manchester based Phoebe Valentine; recorded using a friends CDJ 850, 1210s & a DJM 900 and brings us a mix of house, electro, trance and funky tunes discovered and enjoyed during lockdown.

Phoebe has been seen sharing line ups with DJ Stingray, Hector Oaks and also runs B.L.O.O.M. (Instagram @bloommcr); which has brought the likes of Paula Temple to the Manchester techno scene. As we approach the end of lockdown you can find Phoebe playing alongside Helena Hauff in Liverpool in August or Queens Yard summer party in London.

Mix Series 2021 Ep. 20: Liv G

LNR is a London-based DJ, writer and electronic music fanatic. Her relationship with raving is akin to the music she has been digging over the past five years: weighty, psychedelic, wonky, and sometimes euphoric. Since the beginning of lockdown she has been curating a textual-sonic series on Threads Radio called Biodegradable Soundsystem, exploring micropockets of old school dance music culture. With a keen eye for cultural research, LNR has channeled this interest into her ever growing vinyl collection of nineties techno, trance and hardcore. This 2 ½ hour mix is an aural response to her current sound, from free tekno defenders Spiral Tribe, FKY and DX to the contemporary dislocated rhythms of Sophia Loizou, Diana Azzuz and E-Saggila, there’s something both hypnotic and unanticipated about this excursion.

Noémie is a hard techno DJ and producer. She is strongly inspired by the music from the 90s and acid techno, and mostly plays vinyl. She likes to play a wide range of hard techno, including hard trance, goa, hard dance, acid, EBM, IDM, progressive trance and focuses on the emotions that can be shared with the music. This style is also visible in her hard, yet emotional productions. The female:pressure and Sisu crew member has already released many tracks and 2 EPs on Everyone on acid, Coalition, WOMXN, Insane Industry recordings, The Unusual Suspects, and Durch.

Vinyl only old school techno set, with records from the late 90s and the beginning of 2000s. Focused on rhythms and percs with psychedelic sounds. It's a Trippy and energetic set with various genres from Hard House, to Goa.

November 25th marks the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women, a reminder of the urgency to stand against all forms of gender-based violence.  

In solidarity, I’ve recorded my 90 minutes set at OXI Club from last weekend; blending intensity and emotion to honour survivors and raise awareness. 
Music is a universal language, and this set is my contribution to amplify voices, spark reflection, and inspire action.  

Together, let’s create a world free from violence. Every action matters. Every voice counts.

INVERNO Berlin based Techno dj and FLINTA++ rights activist is our warmly invited artist to being loud at this day, to say something AGAINST VIOLENCES AGAINST FLINTA++.

INVERNO (no pronouns) means winter in Portuguese, but their performances and productions are far from being cold and static. Their multifaceted knowledge of music is reflected in every genre-fluid and enigmatic set. Creativity shines through with their original productions - always playfully crafted and rarely constricted to one genre.

Eager to experiment and explore the full spectrum of Techno, INVERNO likes to blend boundaries between deep/hypnotic and hard/industrial Techno.
INVERNO has a natural understanding for groove and harmonies as they weave
together tracks, focusing on story-telling and rhythm.
INVERNO is the head of KLEM, an experimental label about Ambient, Lofi and Techno. They contributed to several VA compilations with Ambient and Industrial Techno tracks.

In 2019, INVERNO founded BLVSH collective, whose mission is to grow the exposure, peer support and promotion of FLINTA* talents. Awarded in 2022 by the Tag der Clubkultur price, by Club Commission.

Mix Series 2020 with Kaya M !! Such a special release and even more special to share and spread feel good vibes on a Sunday afternoon. Read more about Kaya M's inspiration below. 

I tried to keep this mix to feel good instrumentals and vocals, with a feminine prescience from the Roots Reggae ages to Reggae/dub now. 

Reggae music is timeless and the message is still relevant today. People often overlook the genre for being 'slow' or 'downbeat', except much of modern dance music has been sampled from Reggae, or modified through the process of 'dub', or 'dubbing'. 

Dub is a genre made from the remix. In the 1960's Jamaican people migrated to the UK bringing with them sound system culture. Typically a selector would play the track 'A', followed by the other side 'B' or version. This is what is known as dub, as singer's, emcee's, players of instrument, and the engineer would mix a new version on the same rhythm of the 'A' live in a dance. 

Theron the art of 'Dub' music was born, giving rapid breadth and foundation for electronic music such as dance hall, drum n bass, hip hop, dubstep, techno, and jungle to grow. 

I hope and believe Reggae will continue to have an influence and impact on younger generations' culture today. There exists a pan-global, guitar and campfire somewhere, that's music is dependent on the off-beat and message found in Reggae, which for sure won't go away..

Showcasing music and stories from female electronic music producers in a range of genres, and across the globe, the shows are part of an academic research project to investigate gender diversity (or lack of) in technological, creative industries through a case study of electronic music production.

Sarah Miller 

Born and raised in the former Soviet Union, classically trained musician Sarah Miller has been composing and producing music since the age of 15. Making the move to London to study and teach music, Sarah launched headlong into the city’s electronic netherworld and has not stopped working since.

With her first release on Eton Messy getting picked up for Radio 1 airplay by Pete Tong, her productions have gone from strength to strength, appearing on such labels as Skynet, Alumni, D2, and Pete Dorling and Spatial Awareness’s rising imprint Interzone Music Club.

Drawing influence from such luminaries as Sasha, Len Faki, Ben Klock, Marcel Dettman, Mark Knight, D Ramirez, has been gathering many fans, and her star is most definitely rising. She now proudly presents the first release on her own brand new label – Power Station Recordings. A weighty three tracker showing out her distinctive style of muscular house and melodic techno.

Just Her (aka Claire Spooner)is a Brighton based producer, DJ, head of Constant Circles record label and art project. She's a prolific producer of haunting, groove-heavy deep and progressive beats spanning melodic and vocal techno and tech house. I spent a thoroughly enjoyable couple of hours with her back in 2018 chatting about how she got into production and all manner of tricks of the trade, including how best to impress record labels when you're starting to promote your music.

Sisu Presents: In the Key of She is stoked to bring you our first psytrance artist - Psibindi. 

Having cut her psychedelic DJ teeth on the squat party scene, she's been producing dance music for near on ten years, but singing and songwriting since the age of 13! Founder of female collective, platform and record label Psy-Sisters, Psibindi also heads up a five-piece band that's been described as reminiscent of an 'Asian Prodigy'. As usual Sam Warren will be chewing the fat with Psibindi, playing the whole range of her musical creations and we'll end with an up for it mix from Psibindi recorded at the Halloween TRiBE of FRoG party.

Rena teamed up with top music producer Hannah V (Rihanna, Jessie J, Stormzy) to record her latest single 'Find Me', launched on Psy-Sisters Music - the global arts collective and music label. The single attracted much media interest with interviews on TV show London Live, Soho Radio, Wandsworth Radio and an exclusive interview with top British broadcaster Jasmine Dotiwala on BBC Radio London. ‘Find Me’ was also featured twice on BBC Introducing London.

LP Giobbi (like the Italian... gee-oh-bee) is a "producer-DJ-music director-synth warrior goddess born in Oregon and based in LA". She's also our guest on Episode 13 of Sisu Presents: In the Key of She! 13 is a number traditionally associated with feminine power and energy and OMG that sums LP! This show is one of the most fun and uplifting shows we've produced - bassy, jazzy, piano house and an incredible "tits out" enthusiasm for life (her words, but now mine!!)

When she’s not collaborating or touring with the likes of Sofi Tukker, Jax Jones, Hotel Garuda or Autograf, she’s co-founding burgeoning publishing companies and touring parties (Animal Talk Collective), heading up a thriving non-profit organization to address the lack of representation and equity in electronic music (FEMMEHOUSE), acting as North American Music Director for W Hotels, and running her namesake apparel business (GIOBBI).

In 2019 alone, she performed breakthrough sets at some of the biggest festival stages in the US, including Moogfest, HARD Summer and Coachella—DJMag even named her track “Amber Rose” as one of its 20 massive tracks at this year’s festival. She’s been co-signed by some of music biggest names and brands, providing mixes to Diplo’s Revolution on SiriusXM, collaborating with ROLI and Native Instruments, and partnering with brands like Moog, Guitar Center, and Roland

B.Traits utilizes her influential position to full effect by tackling pressing issues like the need for widely accessible drug safety information, as well as fighting passionately for a rich and progressive club scene in the UK. Her latest project, an event series titled Paciphonic, explores a combination of ambient and minimalist music, sound and frequency activations, and group meditation. She aims to effectively bridge the gap between what she does musically already as a selector, producer, curator, and presenter, and combine it with her knowledge and practice in self-development and life balance. Through Paciphonic, she hopes to build an inclusive community, to collectively enhance and improve our well-being.

DJ Khromata, all the way from San Francisco, USA. In conversation with Sam Warren, while she was in London for a gig this January, she tells us how she got hooked on the psychedelic trance scene from the age of 13, earning herself the nickname of Goa Princess at school. 

Following years of experience playing shows and festivals around the world, her versatile and spirited approach to sound weaving landed her as a label DJ for Iboga Records. Driven by fun, energy and technical purity, she cannot be summarized by any single set or sound, making every Khromata performance an intoxicating, one-of-a-kind experience. 

She now runs her Khromata Nights parties in San Francisco, 
has headlined shows across North America, and  been direct support for legendary artists, playing opening and closing sets for acts such as Astrix, Liquid Soul, Vini Vici, Perfect Stranger, Captain Hook, Ticon, Emok, Atmos, Mad Maxx, Gaspard, Deedrah, and more.

René is one of a growing number of D&B DJs in South Africa. and one of only 10 fxmale artists to be part of the Hospital Records producer mentoring programme. In this show, she talks to Sam Warren about how that’s going for her so far, the drum & bass scene in SA, and she’s full of super useful pieces of advice for anyone starting out in production, one of which is to be patient and bide your time! While her soundcloud page is full of cracking tracks (and we feature several in this show) she has yet to release on a label. We’re pretty sure she’s going to go far when she does!

Coinciding with her work as a graphic designer, over the last years olesia also developed her interest in electronic music, inclining towards the harder, more direct strains of rave music. The Sisu Podcast Series: One For provides a soundtrack to your everyday experiences. These will feature carefully selected tracks, accompanied by stories, insights, brief anecdotes and plenty of captivating conversation.

In One For: The Music Machines music researcher Airali dives into the world of AI-generated music, showcasing some of the most defining tracks that have been written and produced in collaboration with AI (Artificial Intelligence). Over the last few years, more and more artists have been embracing artificial intelligence as a source of inspiration and collaboration. We explore how these musicians are forging new sounds through a wealth of different techniques, unveiling some of the processes behind the creation of the tracks, with some technical details but mostly highlighting the role of the human creative mind working in harmony with new and unexplored technologies.

By nature experimental, the music played throughout the episode goes from poppy electronica to haunting, glitchy vocals and powerful choral hymns.

Sisu is a community that gives a platform to women, trans women and non-binary DJs and producers. Through DJ courses, events, radio shows, an online mix series and workshops, Sisu aims to connect and nurture new and existing talent in the electronic music community.
