It is a sad and tragic fact that people living with Albinism (a genetic condition resulting in little or no pigmentation in the skin, hair and eyes) in East Africa are persecuted and literally hunted, based on the belief that their body parts can transmit magical powers & that they are in some way “demonic.” As a result, they are regularly killed and dismembered— often while still alive— which has led most to understandably live in fear. As if adding insult to already unthinkable injury, many of the women are also subjected to rape due to the ugly myth that having sex with them can cure AIDS.

In 2016, producer and author Ian Brennan (best known for producing Tinariwen’s Grammy-winning album, Tassili, as well as Six Degrees’ two critically lauded Zomba Prison Project releases) traveled to Ukerewe, the largest inland island in Africa which can only be reached by an over packed four-hour ferry ride. It is a place so remote that historically people often traveled there to abandon their children with albinism and now serves as a haven for many with the condition.

There, he worked with members of the Standing Voice community, who volunteered for songwriting workshops. Brennan encouraged them to write about their experiences and to express what they wanted others to understand about their existence. But even among the willing, singing-out proved hard within a group that routinely avoided eye contact, rarely spoke above a whisper, and were unaccustomed to dancing.

When the People Move, the Music Moves Too, slated for June 23, 2017 release on Six Degrees Records, reveals Meklit's startlingly beautiful new sound that seamlessly merges East Africa and the African diaspora via an intimate, rhythmically charged body of songs recorded in Addis Ababa, Los Angeles, New Orleans and San Francisco. 

A collaboration with Grammy Award-winning songwriter and producer Dan Wilson (Adele, Dixie Chicks, Taylor Swift), the album is built on Meklit’s jazz-steeped working-band featuring bassist Sam Bevan, drummer Colin Douglas, and Marco Peris Coppola on tupan drum. Meklit accompanies her translucent, soul-sated vocals on guitar and the six-string krar, an Ethiopian lyre, while Howard Wiley provides pleasingly pungent counterpoint on tenor and baritone saxophones.

Mosquitos – singer Juju Stulbach, singer and multi-instrumentalist Chris Root, keyboardist-programmer Jon Marshall Smith -- are musical nomads whose songs occupy a mythical place somewhere between Brooklyn and Brazil. Mexican Dust is the trio’s fourth album, its first after a ten-year hiatus.  However, the passage of time hasn’t changed Mosquitos’ sound. Brennan is known for traveling the World to produce projects with voices that would perhaps otherwise be unheard. Among the albums he has produced for Six Degrees are two volumes with the Grammy nominated Zomba Prison Project, the Romanian group Zmei3, former Thelonious Monster vocalist Bob Forrest and most recently Tanzania Albinism Collective. He has also produced the Grammy winning album, Tassili for Tuareg group Tinariwen, The Malawi Mouse Boys, the Good Ones and is an author, whose latest book is How Music Dies (Or Lives). In this free wheeling conversation Duskis & Brennan discuss making albums with untrained, non-musicians, that exist outside of typical “World Music” expectations, what it’s like traveling to far flung places and collaborating with your wife, the politics of music as a force for change and many other subjects.

Produced by longtime Brazilian Girls collaborator Frederik Rubens, the Let’s Make Love album came to life over the course of several years. Since they’re now scattered throughout the U.S. and Europe, the four band members assembled when possible to write and record, piggybacking those sessions onto gigs in Istanbul and Madrid and Paris and New York. Despite the distance, Brazilian Girls consistently found their chemistry as kinetic as when they first started out. “It’s a little astounding to us because we’ll go so long without playing, and then we get together and things just happen in this very harmonious way,” says Sciubba.

In a politically divided time it’s hard to imagine a band comprised of members from across Europe and the Levant as not being inherently progressive. The Turbans, whose self-titled debut album will be released on April 6th (Six Degrees Records), features musicians with roots in Turkey, Bulgaria, Israel, Iran, Greece, Spain, and England. Yet transmitting a political message was not their initial impulse. It was simply music. 

And friendship, as it turns out. Oshan Mahony, the “seventh best guitar player in the band” he says with a laugh—the core group is seven members—met violinist Darius Luke Thompson in Kathmandu. The half-Iranian, half-British nomads immediately hit it off. They began busking throughout India, picking up musicians along their journey.

Seven years later The Turbans delivers to global audiences the same high-energy blend of Balkan, klezmer, Gypsy, and sundry other styles they’ve been bringing to venues around the world for years—India, Hong Kong, the Middle East, and all throughout Europe and North America.

Brazilian Girls return in 2018 with Let’s Make Love, their fourth album and first since 2008’s Grammy-nominated New York City. Due April 13 via Six Degrees Records, the album release will be followed by a short U.S. tour in May (see dates below & tix here).

Ela is a stunningly intricate and understated collection of thirteen original compositions, sung in Portuguese and Spanish. Dom's delicate vocals and multi-tracked cello on the album are supported by spare, minimal arrangements by co-producer and label mate Piers Faccini, with textures that fall somewhere between classic Everything But The Girl and The XX.

Dom La Nena - No Meu Pais

Vieux Farka Touré's beautiful latest album was recorded as an homage to his homeland.  Being that his native Mali has been splintered by territorial fighting between Tuareg and Islamic rebels since January 2012, his new album, Mon Pays, is devoted to reminding the world about the beauty and culture of his homeland.
 
‘For me it is a statement for the world that this land is for the sons and daughters of Mali, not for Al Qaeda or any militants. This land is for peace and beauty, rich culture and tolerance.This is our heritage, what we must always fight to protect in any way that we can. For me, that means making music that reminds the world of who we are.’
 
Translating as ‘My Nation,’ this predominantly acoustic undertaking had been planned before the invasions began. Inspired by his work with Israeli pianist and vocalist Idan Raichel, Touré initially went into a Bamako studio to honor the acoustic blues tradition of Northern and Southern Mali. Since that time, Mon Pays transformed into an artifact of cultural preservation.

Two songs on the project -Future’ and ‘Peace’ feature Sidiki Diabate’s kora leading an emotional charge complemented by Touré’s spectacular guitar work. Both tracks represent an important generational "passing of the torch" as Sidiki’s father, Toumani is considered one of the greatest living kora masters and was a close friend of Vieux’s father Ali. Their two records together, In the Heart of the Moon and Ali and Toumani, were awarded Grammies. At the 2011 ceremonies, Vieux accepted the prestigious award for his father, who had recently passed from bone cancer.

Mon Pays is the most mature and lovely record yet from one of this generation's most exciting artists to come out of Mali and one of world music's true rising stars.
